  2. It seems to me that if Thomas doesn’t believe we should have any laws now that didn’t exist in 1789, wouldn’t that preclude, and eliminate, his own marriage? After all, the races couldn’t intermarry back then. And, no, I don’t support anti-miscegenation laws, I’m just saying Thomas should be very careful about what he’s asking for as it could very well backfire on him, personally. It also appears that he and Roberts really hate women.

  4. Nobody is mentioning the women who have ectopic pregnancies or other medical complications (often with very wanted pregnancies) where, if they don’t have an abortion, they will die. There are also situations where the fetus dies in utero but do not pass from her body through a miscarriage. If doctors aren’t permitted to remove the dead fetus, the pregnant woman stands a very good chance of developing an internal infection that will very likely kill her. Not all women with these awful situations are able to fly to another state for an abortion. Are they to be allowed to die? The anti-abortion people are always going on about “protecting the unborn”, but does no one care about or want to protect the women who are alive, breathing and often already have other children to raise? Apparently not. That’s because it’s not really about “protecting life”, it’s about controlling women.

And, ironically, they will complain about the lowering birth rate in the country because they will soon need more workers than will be available, yet they are so busy trying to kill off all the poor people and disallowing (or killing off) immigrants, who are the foundation of the working class. Not to mention that the lowering of food standards and the increasing usage of chemicals in our food (that they approve) has been linked to lower fertility rates in the country. Another thing I don’t understand about the abortion issue is that the GOP has generally been highly racist, yet more Black and Hispanic women have abortions than White women. So, why are they trying to save all those babies that they will later want to kill off? The things they (the Republicans) do almost never show any thought to the outcome of their policies. They can only see the money and the votes they can gain NOW, but nothing about the future of the fallout, not to mention the immorality of those policies.

  8. 74 here, and I remember growing up seeing newsreels about WWII including some of Hitler’s speeches, as well as scenes from the concentration camps, and I remember so many of us were asking “How did the Germans allow that to happen?” And, here we are, just one or two generations later and we’re seeing it happen right in our own country. This is not what our fathers fought and died for. And this is definitely not what we were taught that democracy means. It’s terribly sad, as well as frightening.

  12. Ladies, don’t EVER tell a professor or boss or anyone who must give you permission for time off for any healthcare what that healthcare is. If they ask (which they shouldn’t in the first place) tell them that it’s private, and between you and your doctor, and don’t give in to any pressure from them. (If they continue to pressure you, tell them you’ll have to confer with your lawyer or the administration whether or not they’re allowed to ask you that - NOT whether or not you have to answer). They have no right to even ask you, and much less to punish you in any way for taking the time off, whether that’s by firing you or dropping you from a class. When I was young and “dumb” (and, frankly, I don’t know what the law was at that time and in that state), I made that mistake when I asked my boss for one day off. It was for a tubal ligation for which I already had an appointment. He told me he would fire me if I took the day off for that. Fortunately, I was working for a concession company inside another company run by women and we all got along well together. I went to the head of that company and told her what was going on, and would she be interested in hiring me at that company. I said bye to my previous boss on Thursday, had my surgery on Friday, and was at work on Monday morning at the bigger company, and at the same location. My old boss saw me there and asked what I was doing there and I smiled and said “I work here now. See? I told you I only needed one day off”. I was very lucky I was able to get that job, but the moral of the story is just don’t tell anyone what kind of healthcare you need.its none of their business.

  13. Actually, he can because the Founding Fathers never even imagined that something like this could happen, and so they didn’t put any rule against it in the Constitution. Apparently, he can even “serve” as President from prison. And, you are correct, America IS in deep trouble. Hopefully, someone will bring (and win) a challenge to this problem and correct it.

While, as a feminist I would love to agree with you wholeheartedly, please tell me exactly where and how ladies have “rights and freedoms of their own”, because the Equal Rights Amendment has never been put into the U.S. Constitution. It has passed through Congress a couple of times, and in 2020 it was ratified by the 38th state required for inclusion in the Constitution (Virginia) but each and every time, it has been shut down and tossed aside because of some little legal detail by Congress. And in 2020, after Virginia became the 38th state to ratify it, Congress (particularly Mitt Romney) shot it down even though the Constitution itself says that after the 38th state ratifies an Amendment, Congress’ job is done and it must go directly into the Constitution. That’s how much they hate women and don’t want us to have rights and freedoms.

And an interesting thing I just learned is that The Heritage Foundation (the authors of Project 2025) wrote a Mandate for Leadership for 1981 (Mandate for Leadership is also the primary name of Project 2025), which Reagan gladly adopted. I never knew it went back that far, but, as the old saying goes, “now it all makes sense”. It also had the calls for overturning Roe and outlawing contraception, just like Project 2025.

  22. Perhaps we should pass a law that men cannot get vasectomies because they aren’t allowed “bodily autonomy”, at least where reproduction is concerned. And they better never think about getting penis enhancement surgery. At the same time, rape convictions for men should start getting a minimum mandatory sentence of twenty years. And any man convicted of rape that causes a pregnancy should be required not only to pay eighteen years of child support, but also all pre-natal care for the woman and all medical bills related to the pregnancy and birth of the baby, as well as pay for the time the mother has to take off from work for all doctor’s visits and all hospitalization, and twelve months maternity leave for the mother, in top of the child support. Any decision for whether or not the child gets to meet the father should be left up to the child after the father is released from prison, and the mother should not have to be involved in the meeting.

All these abortion bans couldn’t have happened if we had the Equal Rights Amendment in the Constitution. Regarding the U.S. part of this: also, when the richest corporations/owners have all that money, they actually write legislation (bills) and hand them to their GOP lackeys, and say, “here, pass this”, so it’s affecting all of us. For example, in Judaism, they believe that the already living woman’s life takes precedent in the case of a problem pregnancy. So, why does YOUR personal religious belief take precedent over other religious beliefs? Plus, medical doctors have not come to a consensus as to when human life actually “begins”. So, how is it you know more than the entire medical community? Besides, in Genesis, the first book of YOUR Bible, says that Adam was not “alive” until he took his first breath. So don’t cherry-pick YOUR religious text to make laws regarding the rest of OUR citizens. Also, if you think murder is wrong (which, of course, it, actual murder, is) do you think the death penalty is appropriate for a woman who has an abortion? Is murdering someone for theoretically murdering someone else an appropriate thing to do? How is that not murder? Do you support that?

Thom, I have heard a few times that the Republicans (I believe it was under Reagan, of course) “borrowed” close to a billion dollars from Social Security, with the plan to never pay it back in order to be able to claim that Social Security was “going broke” so they could try to end it or privatize it.   33. Thom, that was excellent, and chilling. I think you’re very correct on that account, and think you ought to expand that thinking into a full-length book, á la 1984 or The Handmaid’s Tale. If you did that, I know it would be a best-seller (I’m sure that at least all your fans would buy it), and it would be a very stark warning to many still thinking “everything will work out”, if it gets published in time. People really need to wake up and realize the truth of what’s already in front of our eyes. I have been saying for the last couple of years that if trump gets elected again, he will immediately set himself up as President-For- Life, as in, a dictator, and we’ll never have free and fair elections again. Now, he and the GOP are actually telegraphing their plans for this country, and you nailed a lot of what they’re now saying they would do. Please write that book! (I’d do it myself, but I’m no writer). People need to have it laid out for them. Who knows, maybe I’ll see you in prison in the future anyway, as I’ve been very vocal about my feelings about trump and his shills. Yeah, I know, I’m a woman, and we’ll probably be be in separate prisons, but I also imagine they’ll be bussing women to men’s prisons to see to the men’s physical “needs” to keep the men from rioting too often. Then again, I’m also an “old” woman (within just a couple of years from your age), and as such, they’ll probably be “eliminating” older women because, by their lights, we simply are of no more use to society as we can no longer reproduce.

  42. Good recommendation. If you like that book, you might enjoy Caliban and the Witch, by Silvia Federici (not sure of that spelling). It’s a much more recent book, and it follows how the fall of the feudal society led to witch-burning and Capitalism, and how that all affected the role of women. It’s very enlightening and scholarly.

My only concern with this tactic (although I believe both Thomases are guilty as sin, and should be brought down) is that it upholds the patriarchal concept that it is always OK to go after a woman even if a male is involved as well. Besides, I don’t think Clarence Thomas would really care, and it would not affect him much, personally. Plus, they both would find ways to continue their grift, only with more secretive methods.

Thom, while I agree that forced sterilization has an abhorrent history in the U.S., it’s still no more draconian for a man to be forced to have a vasectomy than for a woman to be forced to have a baby. (And probably 99% of forced sterilizations in our country have been performed on women, not men. I’d like to see an accurate account of those percentages). And with a vasectomy, there’s no ruining of a man’s future, incl. future earnings and forced poverty, and there’s no child created (or millions of children) for whom our tax dollars will be used to support until maturity, and the man won’t have to be on governmental support, either, as will possibly millions of mothers. And a vasectomy is more easily reversed than a woman’s sterilization (although it’s not 100% guaranteed).
