  6. A law is simply a description of an effect, e.g., V=IR, and says nothing of how & why it is so. A theory is the explanation for why that effect should be so, is well substantiated by evidence and is regarded as the highest you can reach in science.

  27. You don't have to observe something directly to be aware it exists. We can deduce the Earth's shape through the motion of the sun, horizons, angle to Polaris, two celestial poles and producing accurate maps. You can get on a plane on one continent and fly direct to airport on another continent, a feat which requires accurate maps.

  38. Scale. The areas that have a piece of flat terrain are minuscule compared to the overall curvature. You would when the hole collapsed on you but assuming it remained stable (and you aren’t fried by the heat) then gravity would appear to diminish the further down you travelled.
