@jungbolosse3034 Regulations on services have been tightening for some decades in the EU, mainly to prevent corruption and money laundering. In fact this was the reason why the Tories were so hell-bent on Brexit: to avoid new (internal) anti-money laundering regulations that came into effect January 2020. The EU has every right to demand that the UK keeps the same regulations that apply internally, and it would be stupid not to.

Aligning regulations with your closest trading partner -- which is also the world-leading exporter of regulations -- is only sensible. The Brexitards were insane to think that deviating from those standards would allow economic growth. Because the EU is such a large trading block, all producers world-wide align with it -- if they want to export, that is. Thinking, even for a second, that you would do well by dropping them when the EU is your biggest and closest trading partner, is INSANE.

We must be grateful to the Brexiteers. They give the world a graphic illustration of how cooperation is better than strife.
31
To want others to fail in order to hide how badly you messed up is absolute pure evil. That attitude will get you that same place in Hell as those that started Brexit without any plan on how to carry it through.
31
Bozo using N.I. to pressure the EU. It's a good thing the EU cares more about UK citizens than #10 does.
30
As a wise American (admittedly, a rare breed) once said: speak softly, but carry a big stick. That is exactly what the EU is doing. They don't need to show the stick to the UK, or rattle it. Everybody involved knows it is there. It is not militarily but economical: the biggest stick of all these days.
28
Nah. All this noise is just Tories struggling to stay in power another day. They need to divert public attention away from what they are really up to: turning the UK into a totalitarian dictatorship.
28
Journalists usually have a hard time translating scientific facts into stories. But picking a single line out of context, like they have done, is inexcusable, and all the more so because of the sensitive nature of the issue. This is plain bad journalism, and needs to be pointed out. Thanks, Phil.
28
@Chris-rp9df She had to choose between Brexit or unemployment in the great purge of the Tory party.
27
Yes I do. There are the complaints of bullying, but as those have not been independently verified AFAIK, I don't give them too much credence. But regardless, he was an EXCELLENT speaker who always remained impartial on political debates. He was NOT impartial when Parliament opposed the government, and that is as it should be. The Speaker must be on the side of Parliament, whose job it is to scrutinize the government. Not like Hoyle, who is a staunch supported of the government.
27
When that misery gets real, and takes hold of the nation, please remember who led you into this: the Tory party AND the media.
27
That you can spend almost two minutes enumerating all groups whose vote has been made inconsequential due to FPTP voting, is a very clear demonstration of how undemocratic it really is.
26
In politics, there should be no such thing as a "Safe Seat". It means that PM's are no longer selected for quality or expertise but rewarded for doing nothing.
26
The phrase "A Pyrrhic Victory" will soon be replaced with "A Brexit Vote".
26
What makes the DUP a sad group extremists is that they want to get rid of the Protocol without proposing a viable alternative. As you say: "About as popular as a ham sandwich at a bar-mitzvah". That was pure gold.
26
If any Brit thinks that they can force the EU's hand to lower its standards as it diverges, think again. The EU is in the process of saving the planet by raising standards and forcing international suppliers to adopt them as well. You either adopt EU standards or you are out of the market. There is no way puny UK can oppose that.
25
I always thought the joke about quitting your membership at the gym then to expect access as usual, a bit far fetched. Turns out many Brits actually believed they could do that... Never mind about the blokes with the records, a bit of smuggling is part and parcel of having borders. But they shouldn't be too surprised to have their records confiscated when disembarking. Misspelling the name of my city of birth, however, is inexcusable...
25
The EU is not too worried about all internal UK shenanigans. As long as the W.A. is being followed. The responsibility for confronting the Tories with their mis-management lies with the media. The opposition has a role to play, of course, but without a platform ("the media") that will report truthfully, what can they do?
25
I can understand them alright. They have bought the lie and allowed government and media to blame the EU for everything without accepting any responsibility for decades. The NHS getting less funding? THE EU DID IT! Foodbanks popping up everywhere? THE EU MADE IT NECESSARY! Granny broke her toenail? THE EU DID IT! Now they will discover the truth of the matter the hard way, in the University of Hard Knocks. VERY hard knocks. The Idiots.
25
Judges do not stop bad politicians, that is the job of voters.
25
Also, the most dire warnings in Project Fear never put a time frame on them. As Britain is being handled with kid gloves by the EU (out of pity, not because England deserves such treatment), what they have experienced now is nothing compared to what is coming in a few years time, when e.g. the financial services will move from London to the EU. All the dirty money in the world can not begin to make up for that catastrophe.
25
Brexit is revealing the cruelty of the Tories for all to see. They'd rather have N.I. suffer hardship and even civil war than admit that they lied about Brexit.
24
Looks like Brexit will be the modern equivalent of the highland clearances: the destruction of small farmers for the benefit of the large land owners.
24
The tragedy of Brexit is that its effects will only become visible over years. And it will take years to repair the damage.
24
"Carefully laid out plan" Tories: We don't do plans. Planning is something for businesses. Businesses: Please tell us what to plan for! Tories: Eeerh, that would require us to plan. We don't do plans. "To govern is to plan ahead" -- Dutch proverb (Regeren is vooruitzien).
23
Argentina was ruined by populist rulers that tried to hide their incompetence as long as possible by keeping up appearances. UK is on exactly the same trajectory.
23
Nobody is talking about the elephant in the room: how are British services doing? The UK made 70% of her income through services, and presumably they have been hit hard by Brexit. But how hard? Is there any information on that?
23
"It dominoes until you have ghost towns": Thatcher did it to regions, Johnson does it to nations.
23
"The burned hand teaches best". They could have chosen not to light the fire, so I do not feel sorry for them. It was obvious that Bozo was a narcissistic pathological liar before the 2019 election and yet they trusted him. Brexit is a much-needed lesson in humility and common sense. Not just for the UK, but for the rest of the world as well.
22
None of the arguments of Brexiteers made any sense at all. They were simply lies to push through a measure that hurt both the EU and the UK very badly. The only one who benefited has been Putin.
21
For the next 5-or so years, we will continually get these type of updates. It is the longest train-wreck in history. Enjoy your winnings, Brexiteers!
21
@gauloiseguy I wel remember the half-dozen pots we used to store left over cash from a European holiday. All the different types of Franks and Marks and Kroner etc... And the stamps in the passports at every border crossing, surrounded by people with submachine guns. The inspections of the car. Praying you wouldn't be picked out for a thorough inspection...
21
Great to inject some realism into the rejoiners. Sadly, what the Tories have done within a few years will take decades to undo. First of all, the UK needs to re-establish a base of trust with the EU, including confidence that the next government will not again move in the opposite direction. It would be very dangerous for the EU to let you rejoin the SM or freedom of movement, only to get a government that will try to subvert everything a few years later. Brexit is done, and it will require a MASSIVE, PERMANENT political reform in the UK to undo it. You have lost the EU's trust, and only reform will regain it.
21
I love that early negotiation photo. Herrings invited to dinner by sharks.
21
"Keeping Up Appearances" is getting more and more interesting. How much longer will he be able to keep up the charade?
21
The Conservative company is moving another step towards full-on fascism.
21
IF the UK gets another free election, campaigning for Proportional Representation is an absolute no-brainer. Again, IF you get that chance to vote in freedom, you will not get a second one before the UK is dissolved and England has crashed into chaos.
21
Correction: this is how you WILL be treated. As the UK economy continues in its death spiral, this government will leave everybody out in the cold.
20
Excellent analysis, as usual. I also think the rise of extremist selfishness in France and the rest of the EU, very worrying. People have forgotten the lessons taught by WW2, especially how extremists play on public sentiments, offering easy solutions for hard problems. But these promises are always lies. Because there are no easy solutions to hard problems, and these goons know it. So they make these promises to gain power, only to follow their own, hidden, agenda once they get it.
20
The legend of Spitfire Hunter Telling lies in all-caps doesn't make them true. Bozo is a pathological liar. He has been fired for lying. He lied about Brexit. He lied about the N.I. protocol. He continuously lies about the EU. He lied about "holding all the cards". He lied about his deal being oven ready. He lied about his deal being better than May's. He lied about NHS funding. He lied many times about Covid. He lies so much that you literally can't trust a single word that comes out of his mouth.
20
With two of the nations being taken out against their expressed will...
20
This bean counter mentality of squeezing the low-paid jobs is utterly moronic. E.g. Henry Ford proved a century ago that paying workers well, is better for business in the long run, if only because you get to pick the best workers when you pay them more.
20
"tougher sentences" That is absolutely useless. When there is too much crime, that points to systemic problems in society. Those problems are not addressed when punishing more harshly. Higher minimum wages and better education are what solves crime.
20
@jasbindersingh2441 Some people who are not sure will stumble on this channel and be convinced. It gives ammunition to those who speak with people. It will influence e.g. Labour strategy, if it doesn't already. And it leaves a historic record of everything that has happened for people to point to. So, in spite of having a limited reach among those who really should be listening to this, this is definitely a worthwhile effort.
20
Project fear becoming a reality. I well remember the scorn Brexitards heaped on us for warning that the UK economy was going to implode. Turns out we were underestimating the capacity of Tories to muck things up.
19
The only thing that can beat any sense into this government is a prolonged public outcry. This will not happen until companies start going tits up by the hundred, as a result of Brexit. It is going to be nasty. The outcry needs to be louder and firmer than what Thatcher had to face over her atrocities.
19
"We don't need a Fox-type channel in the UK" The BBC is filling that role perfectly at the moment.
19
Another caveat in A16.1: It must be clear that the problems are caused by the protocol. So things that are actually caused by the Brexit / the WA can never be a reason for triggering A16. That there is a border in the Irish sea is part of the WA, or that that border needs to be guarded by the UK, can never be a justification for throwing the Protocol away.
18
"Brexit-powered inflation running out of control" That is a few years earlier than I expected! Good thing it is, hopefully the sheeple will remember who promised them sunny uplands than delivered the exact opposite. Anyone still voting Tory needs to be taken into care.
18
Nurses are some of the most dedicated and professional people in the workforce. They are acutely aware of the importance of their work. When they go on strike, things must be very, very bad indeed. Compare their work ethic with that of those deciding their future, makes me very angry.
