  1. You are absolutely right in thinking that this conflict is exactly what Johnson has been hoping for. Throughout his interactions with Macron, he has been as insulting as he could get away with, and provoking the French by not giving them the licences they are entitled to. When you have your attacker in a strangle hold, and he refuses to stop, at some point you have to squeeze a bit to let him know you are serious. That often makes him even more aggressive. So you squeeze a bit more. But you don't give up your advantage just because you feel sorry for him. Bozo chose this fight, he can get it and discover he is, in fact, helpless in a strangle hold. Such a shame that it are the British people who will suffer because of it. They definitely put the cross in the wrong box.

That is what the voters were promised on a YES to Brexit so that is what the referendum means. People who warned for the consequences of a hard Brexit were ridiculed because the Brexit would be so soft you wouldn't notice the difference.

As the economic situation grows desperate, that hatred and distrust become anger that grows to a point where an outlet is needed. It can either explode inward, at the Tory government, or outward at the EU. So, yes, while it seems inconceivable at the moment, if the UK really does go into an economic tailspin (as is likely seeing how the Tories are bungling everything), it may well turn into war. Possible triggers might be either Gibraltar or the Republic of Ireland, but that is very hard to predict. It may also be a civil war with Scotland. That war will be the dying breath of the Conservative Party, so they are playing a game that is more dangerous than they realise, also to themselves. This is one reason why the EU is treating the UK with such forbearance.

  16. The reason the rest of the world got rid of "Imperial" style units was because they were slightly different everywhere. The Amsterdam voet, the Paris pouce, etc, etc, etc. So when a French scientist invented the metric system, and a certain French general suddenly had to cope with dozens of different unit systems, everybody was very glad to adopt the improvement. As usual, the Brits and the Yanks are a bit behind...

  17. Talking about u-turns: moving from a production economy to a service economy to an agricultural / pastoral economy. Brexit is moving the UK backward a few centuries. Time to leave the cities and move back to the villages.

Also, there is no way you would have missed the shot across the bow in Feb 18 2020 that I am referring to. My conclusion: I call BS.

  19. I have heard some people say that the UK's struggles with the EU were because UK leadership is not used to diplomacy or compromise. In the "winner takes it all" system that is not necessary: the PM states his/her will and it is done. But in a real democracy, that does not work.

They let academics (who rarely give definite statements where the parameters are unknown) debate with fools of strong opinions but little actual knowledge or wisdom. And then they did not give academics time to explain the uncertainties or point out the lack of substance in the fool's arguments, but let them be shouted over. That is not a fair debate by any means. No, the debate was heavily rigged in favour of the Leave campaign. It is such a shame that those responsible will not suffer any consequences, until they stand before God. As Tusk said, there will probably be a special place in Hell reserved for them, for betraying those who trusted them.

  23. To the EU, it was crystal clear that all talk about A16 could safely be ignored. In spite of all talk by Frosty, they are not even close to meeting the conditions for triggering A16. The game was up when the gracious offer by the EU was rejected by the UK, without clarification, and instead of pointing to issues that could be a basis for triggering A16, they started pointing to the role of the ECJ -- which can never be a reason for triggering it.

  31.  @johnrussell3961  That service economy will very soon take a massive hit due to the EU moving Euro clearing to within its borders. That focus on "service", as the Tories want since Thatcher, will bite the UK very hard in the behind, as a service economy needs international costumers. Otherwise it can not import all those foods and goods that it no longer produces itself. And of course, the biggest internation customer for UK services was the EU. Good luck replacing that loss.

That is the key matra of neo-liberals: personal responsibility, no government responsibility. Every man for himself.   37. I am a bit conflicted about all this. On the one hand, I welcome the growing disaster as it will teach the Brexitards (and the rest of the world that is watching) a vital lesson. On the other, I do feel sorry for those who voted against all this. Let us hope the necessary lessons are learnt before the real misery starts (hyperinflation, serious food shortages, starvation among the poor, widespread unemployment, violent riots).

  46. It is no use calling out lies in the UK Parliament: you get silenced by the Speaker. It is the job of the journalists to do that, who are failing spectacularly in the UK. Usually, Bozo's lies are red herrings anyway, so replying to them would be playing Bozo's game. Starmer sticks to his line of reasoning, and points out Bozo's failure to answer questions to discredit him.
