@antixocialman I agree. The problem we faced was not price, but no other alternatives. That is now changing. When we have more options to buy from Vietnam, India, Mexico, Bangladesh etc we will do so. That is getting much easier.
6
Add rare earths and an export tax on iron ore, say $50 per tonne and now you're talking.
6
You know very little about India. It will never be close to the US.
5
@smmm5559 Saudi Arabia and Dubai get their wealth from oil and gas, which they didn't know how to extract without Western assistance. Malaysia has a broader economy but again depends on Western technology for its prosperity. Islam didn't help any of those places get wealthier, Western technology did.
5
@brettmartino7117 If it comes close to Ukraine facing defeat several European nations will intervene militarily to prevent that happening. Poland and the Baltic states for sure and others who understand their national security is at stake. Russia can never win.
5
@backinblack1982 No doubt many mistakes were made in Iraq and other places. But it gets tiring to see people pulling up absurd numbers like that. So their lies need to be challenged.
5
You didn't check the age criterion for the visa you applied for? Mate, that's on you.
5
@carlstevens781 To have the faintest shot of achieving those goals they will need a lot of Western military tech. At present the US won't even sell them f-16's. Maybe they should work on being more amenable to the West.
5
That's true but there some exceptions like UK and Japan and France to a certain extent. All have large navies that could ease the burden on the US.
5
@theJellyjoker Don't you think the car manufacturers have already done that? Quality and reliability of supply are also key factors.
5
He's definitely not shilling for Putin. You're another one who needs to learn some logic.
5
@touger9759 Who wouldn't be glad that a murderous dictator who has been responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people was about to get his comeuppance? That's not bias. That's the normal human reaction.
5
How do you know?
5
@yomajo Australia can supply them with all the uranium they need and they have excellent an relationship between each other.
5
Because Trump made it so.
5
@robertshelton3796 Do you think that allowing Russia and China to run the world will help to improve US border security, national security or prosperity? If you believe so, just explain how.
5
@robertshelton3796 Securing your borders is a necessity for sure. But surely, your government and your populace can protect your borders and your national interest by supporting Ukraine and Taiwan all at once. The US can walk and chew gum at the same time, so to speak. Why frame it in black/white terms? Your concern for your borders suggests you are concerned to protect national interest. Doesn't it follow that helping Ukraine and Taiwan is also a part of protecting your national interest? Russia has been pointing nukes at you for 7 decades. China for 4 decades. It helps to know who your friends are and who your enemies are.
5
And nuclear facilities.

Iran attacking Saudi oil infrastructure would be quite rational. Saudi Arabia is their mortal enemy. They would not want to be exporting zero oil while the Saudi's are exporting 10 million barrels a day at $300. All that money could be spent on weapons that tips the balance of power permanently in the Saudi's favor. Iran would also be at risk of a revolution, so the leadership may have little to lose at that point.
4
@bilic8094 You will have explain how? As someone who has posted a lot of pro Russian comments, you are sounding very hypocritical.
4
@bilic8094 Azerbaijan retook land that was occupied by Armenia. It has not taken any land. Do you understand this? Serbia was committing genocide on the Kosovars and NATO intervened to prevent it. You have only your murderous desires to blame for it. I take it you support that genocide? Like the one in Bosnia too. Do you support the massacre at Srebrenica or are you a denier?
4
Monaco? Are they bringing their Lamborghinis?
4
@richardtaylor6341 Maybe it's your world view that's becoming rapidly dated, not PZ's.
4
@teekay_1 How many is that compared to those that stayed? My point still stands. Only recently Ukraine announced it was dropping the conscription age to 25 from 27. It gives the options to lower it again as they need to.
4
Autocratic states are not so great at adaptation.
4
@relaxletgo7105 Peter can worry all he likes. But there is plenty of evidence that the Russians are down to about 1500 tanks. And they're losing about 200 a month even before a major counteroffensive. Peter has overestimated the Russians consistently for the past 16 months.
4
It's a critical relationship for both countries. I hope PZ is wrong and rather than a China collapse we see something more akin to Japanification. If China collapses, the Australian economy collapses along with it.
4
PZ certainly thinks the end of the world is.
4
First you'll have to find him. Then you'll have to catch him. Bring a large net and several tranquilizer darts. I have a feeling he won't be caught easily.
4
That's a good analysis of Australia. Although we have a housing bubble, we have nothing like the sub prime issue that the US had in 2008. With immigration going bonkers over the next 2-3 years there's unlikely to be much of a shakeout. We certainly need to start value adding as suggested by PZ.
4
That would probably result in Israel intervening as it will never allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons. And with good reason.
4
Lenders have the right to assess credit risk as they like. If you try and force them into lending against their risk criteria, then you can be certain they will stop lending money.
4
@timstapleman You are ill-informed. You need to read the NATO-RUSSIA founding act 1997. In that document it states that NATO and Russia do not regard each other as enemies. It makes clear that every nation has the right to enter into any security arrangements it wishes. That includes former USSR countries joining NATO. Russia cannot flout international agreements it has entered into such as this and the Budapest Memorandum as well. Russia is the sole cause of this war. Wake up and listen to what they are saying: they want control over all of the former states of the USSR and the Russian Empire. They are saying it repeatedly. This war is driven by Russian imperialism.
4
Given that Ukraine is fighting against a country that has hundreds of nuclear weapons aimed at the US I'd say $100 billion over 3 years is a drop in the ocean. During that time the US defence budget was $2.5 trillion. So Ukraine got about 4% and all they got was largely obsolete weapons that were going to be decommissioned anyway. Ukraine has severely weakened the US' main military threat at a bargain basement price with not one body bag coming home.
4
He has the vocabulary of a ten year old. It's easy to understand if you're much the same.
4
But with no evidence. Just your belief and nothing else.
4
@VioIetShift The financial sectors operate under different laws. NZ is a small market for the big 4 Australian banks. NZ may have some degree of reliance on Australia (how much is debatable ) but Australia doesn't need NZ for anything as far as I can tell.
4
@Rob_F8F There are 22 million millionaires in the USA. Nearly 9% of the population.
4
@kencouch3328 There is no greater difficulty for an enemy to destroy your oil storage facilities than electrical infrastructure. A missile strike on either has the same effect. Oil refineries are sitting ducks. Your jerry can of gasoline will last you half a day.
4
@glengarbera7367 Try to get your government to follow what Chile is doing. Canada has massive lithium deposits. The Aussie companies are trying to buy up as many concessions as possible.
4
@solman6466 58 days does not make those lots empty. It's typical PZ hyperbole.
3
Most of the deposits that are discovered will never become mines as they will not be economically viable. You need high grade, low extraction cost and comparitively low capital cost before you can build a mine.
3
The same way we stopped the USSR.
3
Everyone except the two nations at war.
3
@EnterpriseKnight The destruction of all Russian forces in Ukraine and the sinking of the entire Russian Black Sea fleet by NATO. Thereby bringing NATO into the war and leaving Russia two options. The first is to accept defeat. The second is further escalation with nukes, which would result is the complete annihilation of Russia.
3
We also don't know how much corruption has affected their military. Will we see tofu dreg military equipment? Who knows.
3
@yurimuratov957 Yes. Do exactly what Reagan did to destroy the USSR. Ramp up military spending, isolate Russia and destroy their economy. Then watch them collapse. The USSR was far larger and stronger than present day Russia. So the outcome is inevitable but it may take a few years.
3
@robc8468 India cannot be a reliable partner with Western countries because of their very close political support of Russia. If you're going to invest in a new manufacturing facility, it would make sense to build it in the US or as close to the US as possible in a country that is an ally of the US. India is not in contention. Mexico is an obvious alternative.
3
@miraphycs7377 Didn't know that. Thanks for the info.
3
@kaahzvi5820 But with no experience at warfare. Sounds like a recipe for disaster.
