  7. I had a completely different experience visiting Maui twice. I didn’t do the resort thing. I hiked, went on picnics, visited museums and gardens and cultural centers, swam in the ocean, talked to people. I loved it so much that I now study the language.

  15. Infrastructure problems- no local landfills. Cost of taking things to landfill. No recycling program. Poverty. Sometimes outsiders use Reservation land as dumping grounds. Some tourists leave lots of litter- I made a video about Lake Tahoe getting trashed by visitors. If there are dead cars, people might be using them for parts. If there are things on the porch, it might be where they are using tools or making something. My friends leave all their boots, gloves and chainsaws, etc on the porch so they don’t track the mess inside. They’ll be using it all the next day, why drive it over to the barn. Life isn’t a Martha Stewart magazine out there. They aren’t out to impress anyone or set up for a photo shoot. There are hundreds of volunteers who give up their weekends to clean up the beaches and trails around Lake Tahoe after the visitors leave every weekend holiday. Literally tons of garbage is left behind- they can’t bother to pack it out or find a dumpster. Now imagine a reservation- how far away is the dump, how much will it cost to use it and to pay for gas for the truck? How many volunteers can you gather? There are hundreds of reservations, not all have the same problem with trash.

  47. I’m looking for land on my own to live off grid. Never seem to find anyone interested in doing this as a small group. I’ve lived in a cabin off grid before so I know it suits me. I’ve been learning herbalism , poultry raising and all sorts of other skills over the years. And I have a library that will keep me busy long after any EMP or economic collapse.
