  4. Yes! I grew up in the 1970s, so I understand all these experiences that you related - and then some. Everything is instantaneous now. The joy of anticipation is gone. And you don't even have to leave the house to do anything any more. I am so glad I grew up in an earlier era. My childhood was fun.

  5. The thing about the cows. I live rurally near a dairy farm..well..the dairy farm is at least a mile or more away. The cows scream for hours when their calves are removed. I can hear it from my house and it is horrifying. I agree with you about Gap clothing. I used to shop their clearance to get high quality items but they are terrible quality now. I have several tiered t shirt dresses from them that I wash in lingerie bags and line dry and after one season they all started to come undone at the seams. I have recently been buying from Duluth Trading Company and find their stuff is be very good…but you have to not mind wearing Gardencore Aesthetic.

  9. The 9-5, 40 hours week was designed in the 30’s and 40’s with a man in mind. It was ideal because he worked all day, and had a wife to do cooking, cleaning, and child-rearing. This model no longer works because there is no domestic servant to do all these things now that we have to be 2 income households due to voting for politicians who enacted “trickle down economics” and tax breaks for the wealthy, allowing a transfer of all the wealth created by the lower classes to the rich, and that’s why life sucks now.

  11. Totally agree on real estate agents. Having sold 2 properties in my lifetime, I've felt the pain of 5% (+ 13% HST!!) commission first-hand. Not to mention the insanely high taxes on capital gains for income properties ... but that's another story. There is no justification for paying a real estate company tens of thousands of dollars for doing so little actual work. And the pressure to lower the asking price for a faster sale and quicker turnover, which also benefits the agent - not the seller. I'd be happy to pay someone a flat fee for helping me through the process, but this 5% nonsense is a pure scam.

I could not resist asking Siri the cheap vs. frugal question just to see what it would say. 🤣I also reuse aluminum foil and parchment paper, price match, wait for items to go on sale, coupon search, do laundry before 7 a.m. weekdays or on the weekend because of the rate change during peak times, make my own almond milk, hummus, nut butters, cleaning supplies, air dry most of my clothing, stick to a classic style wardrobe, utilize the library instead of buying books, only use streaming services during the trial periods and walk anywhere that I do not have to drive to save on gas.

I work in a research lab, with some of the smartest people in academia that I've ever met, and because we're in a combination of education and healthcare, I've always assumed that the people in the tops of these fields were the ones with morals made of titanium and ethics that would rival that of a saint. I was so damn wrong. I had a bit of an existential crisis when I realized that a lot of the smartest people around me were engaged in really deplorable behavior - everything from cheating (both in their marriage and in their job), talking down to those who were 'beneath" them and just general assholes at times. It's like they all drank a potion to inflate their ego and level of unethical behavior when they reached their positions and never left.

  39. For about a decade of my life I was an interior designer. I did high-end custom residential and worked with some of the wealthiest people in my community. I would state that about 80% of them were either total assholes or completely f*** up addicts in some way. They either treated me like s**, calling my boss to report something I had done, always looking for reasons to be offended and wanting me to kiss their boots, or just talking down to me in really nasty ways. Or else they were alcoholics, sexaholics, or had severe eating disorders. I totally came to the conclusion there is about an 80% chance that lots of money really f*** your head up.
