  1. There is also in Brooklyn a abandonment tunnel, downtown Brooklyn on Atlantic Avenue from Flatbush Avenue down to water east river part of the Long Island railroad system. We have something similar here in the upstate of South Carolina called the Stumphouse Tunnel that's now a park but I would love to have you do a piece on it if you would. I think he might have a point about Marshland being needed for the ground but I think it has to do with the fact that the signal would bounce off of the water not sure if it's the fact that the water has surface tension so it makes it good surface to bounce off of but if you go to Seattle the TV stations in the 50s as well as am transmitters in the 30s were on like Vashon Island so that it would be able to bounce off of all of that salt water I'm sure that's probably Marshland in New Jersey off the coast of New Jersey too it being a very tall antenna it would also help to have the signal bounce the ocean as well

  11. I believe that the name Hell Gate had its origins in a man named Mr. Hale, who hailed from that vicinity in the early years of the occupying of NYC by European settlers, i.e. "Hale's Gate". I read that in a book named "The Hussar's Millions" about the loss of that ship. Apparently despite great efforts to locate and recover the extremely valuable cargo of the Hussar, the endeavor did not bear fruit.

  32. I respectfully disagree that one visit is enough. I've been there myself, and each time I discovered something new, something I overlooked before. It's enchanting each time, but I don't go very often, maybe 3 or 4 times in my entire life, and usually it's to introduce someone new to the area to something out of the ordinary. The first time i went was as a kid, and my dad told me everything for the house was carried up on the guy's back, and I thought he meant all in one trip. After learning the truth, I wasn't as impressed with it, and my dad had a good laugh at how hard I was to please. Regardless, the gift shop book about the house was one of my favorite childhood books for picture gazing.
