The only word in common use I can think of in 30 seconds is "Tory", the oldest language in these islands is Gaelic, it's the language we had before all the invasions. Hmm, maybe "grockle" & "emmet" are pre- invasion words too? They're used in Cornish in a disparaging way to describe tourists. I think "emmets" translates as "ants"...

I like your thinking but you've missed a couple of things 1) the Civil Service does the day-to-day management, Government sets policy & has powers to micromanage. 2) Crown Commissions are independent. 3) the Judiciary was run from the House of Lords till Blair's interference & thereby independent of Government. 4) Blair pulled the teeth of the House of Lords precisely because they were showing independence.

  23. we tried being a republic in the 1600s, it was one of the outcomes of the English Civil Wars. It was an abject failure, Parliament eventually gave in & installed a monarch again, though one with a nominal role & very little power.

  28. There is at least one Court case calling out Johnson's lies, Marcus J Ball's #BallVJohnson centres around his #Brexit #LiesOnABus. It was thrown out because the Judge drinks with BoJo's dad & half the Cabinet but it looks like it might resume in the Scottish Courts... The Good Law Project also has him & his Party in Court pretty much continuously

  36. so you're suggesting a president should be the head of the judiciary rather than the executive? That would make the constitution of the judiciary 'interesting', it would convert it from a consensus-building institution into the sort of power-grubbing mayhem we see in our current executive. Sorry but that doesn't seem attractive to me.

It's a major reason people are getting into rubber boats - it's not a great deal more risky & at least they won't get teargassed, robbed or beaten while they're in the boat.

  47. We didn't have a referendum when we joined the EEC, just a confirmatory one a couple of years later. We didn't get a referendum when the Communities became the EU either, I understand every other Member State did though, you remember Ireland refused it first time around & changes had to be made before people would vote for it.

  49. Yes, the F1 sponsorship of Blair was surprising, the owner at the time was the son of England's most famous Fascist which (you would think) conflicted with Blair's main sponsor, Israel. But then again, Israel's very existence owes a lot to the nazis & Israel has adopted many nazi attitudes & techniques so perhaps the relationship is warmer than the Holocaust Remembrance Society would have us believe.
