Who says war was not exepected? That day or hour? No. But war warnings had been issued days before. And US forces in China had evacuated "mostly" by the Dec. 7th.

@johnphillips519 Gen.Tojo ran the Government.

🤣lol

Or the fuel? ⛽

FUN FACT... the boat used in the TV show was actually a Ex-USAAF Crash boat. As the name implies that was designed to pick up downed Pilots. And notably its former owner was Howard Hughes. Who used the boat as a chase boat for his testing of the Spruce Goose Flying boat...

@nedimar5696 There are both technical as well as political considerations. There is still a great deal of human history prior to 1950.
16
@baltsosser Which begs the question, Why have no new ships been named in his honor? The only one, DE -1023 was decommissioned in 1968.
16
Are there still active mines lurking around? With two wars and both sides dropping them, is there a danger of unswept mines? 🤔
16
@bkjeong4302 Not to mention all the Bermuda Triangle stuff never found. Easy to find? We still have not found MH 370.😑
15
Another long range projectile issue to factor is the, "Coriolis effect." Depending on hemisphere, a projectile will drift right or left due to Earth rotation.
15
USS Ranger due size and protection issues stayed in the Atlantic Fleet. While doing mostly training and aircraft ferry ops; she did see combat in Operation Torch. And later vs German forces in Norway.
14
We have nasty bad habit of shooting friendly forces.😒Sorry....
14
The Lost 52 Project has found another lost sub this Week. USS Harder was lost with all hands in 1944 in the South China Sea.
14
Technology tends to run ahead of tactics.
14
Speaking of Captain Bligh... I don't think we've ever had a Wednesday special on his voyage to Timor? And just how he managed to pull off this lifeboat feat?
14
😔 Let us all pause and remember the hands lost at sea on The Royal Thai Navy ship Sukhothai. Rest in Peace. The sea is the common enemy of all flags.⚓
13
@robertmatch6550 Yes! That is why folk still talk nonsense about 9-11. Nothing needed to melt to lead to a loss of structural steel strength.
13
🤔 Is Richard Rodger's "Victory at Sea" a option for a theme ?
13
Interesting the topic of the Panama canal comes up. The major restriction on the canal right now actually is water.🌊 Or rather the lack of it. For the last few months World shipping has been piling up on either side of the canal waiting to to transit. The region has been facing a severe drought problem. The lack of rain is not adequately refilling the lakes that feed the canal. Thus the cost of travel has increased and the number of transits daily being allowed has been cut.
12
Speaking of speed... I see we have Americas Cup catamarans with foils flying at 40 knots. A sailboat that can out racecar a carrier.⛵
12
The story of how survivors of the Emden travel home? Yep, great sub story.
12
Happy Birthday to the US Navy Submarine Service. April 11, 1900 The USS Holland {SS-1) was purchased.
12
Fast and handsome vessel.
12
@420JackG 😏We have lots of swords. Time for a few plowshares...
11
@acester86 They don't last forever. Most don't daily drive a 30 year old car? Hardware are software change. We have had 10 versions of Windows in 30 years. Powerplants age. Subsystems like electrical, steam and plumbing fail. There is also the manpower issue. Newer ships need smaller crews.
11
The Oldsmobile M4 cannon is in the nose of the P39. The engine is behind the pilot.
11
@Volunteer-per-order_OSullivan First, it does not have 5 times the range. The Iowa had anti ship UGM-109b Tomahawks or the optional nuclear. The Kirov's only have 20 anti ship missles. And the Iowa's are armored to fight other BB's. Even if the missle defenses fail, it can take the hits and still hit back. Also, extended range ammo then in development would have boost the gun range to 100 miles. It is fair fight match then and now.
11
We need drug testing for questions like this.
11
The Greek Navy. The crazy cat lady Navy..... They take stray ships.😾🚢
11
My MK 1 Eyeballs share your pain..
11
@bkjeong4302 where do you see in history anyone thinking long-term? It's not just Japan. I don't think anyone who came up with the 100 years War were planning for it to the last that long? And I don't think the guys running the Crusades had logistical plans based on centuries?
10
That five minutes left me as clueless as the first 5 minutes of Calculus 1 class. 😟
10
I have crazy picture in my mind of Grizzly bears eating boats rather than Salmon.....🐻🚤🚤🚤🚤

Welcome to the Naval Nerd society. 🙄⚓
10
@jamierogerson5538 the French and Japanese will do it one better.
10
The 1950's was a case of too much tech, too fast. Companies used to piston engine design found a steep learning curve in jets. Trying every bit of German ideas without testing did not help either.
9
I noticed on the news this week that the last remaining survivor of the USS Arizona passed away at age 102. 😪 hopefully, he will join his Shipmates...
9
🙄 Drach has to face travel rules. Yet we let thousands walk into America. Sigh.......
9
In other words.... better mouse 🐀 does not defeat smarter cats 😼with airpower.
9
😏 when we think about rapid development just consider that today is the anniversary of the Wright brothers first flight in 1903. And by 1914 , people were taking flying machines to war.
9
@timberwolf1575 Actually, there is no market for another carrier museum. There are near a half dozen already.
9
Great idea. But, outside the scope of this channel. He stays Pre 1950 mostly.
9
@RCAvhstape Old saying.... "Fight like you train. Train like you fight."
9
This is why taxing the the rich, has a down side. They have no money left to spend on things like this.
9
@Ugly_German_Truths Nimitz with Tide coupons? 🤔
9
Good review. I guess you can sum up her career as being; the Ringo Star of the Fab Four class....
9
@rutabagasteu remind me about a hunting accident story I saw the other day. A hunter somebody's family husky. Guy said he thought it was a coyote.
9
@postron5649 it's more of British Admirals fighting the last war. Rather than the next one.
9
There were however the, " 4 Chaplains " of the S. S. Dorchester sinking. Being Army, they received the DSC.
9
2 new Virginia class Attack subs SSN-803 Arizona and SSN-802 Oklahoma were ordered in 2019.
