The difference may be (I mean may literally: hence, maybe not, too early to tell) that the West has no problem with the Nazis in Donbass, while Russia most certainly does. So . . .   46. During the Cold War, the socialist experiment that was the Soviet Union greatly enhanced the living standards throughout Europe by maintaining pressure on the ruling class to behave. Now, the Russian Federation, after having been gutted in the 90s under the ascendancy of Clinton-Blair neoliberalism and globalization, has come back strong and is challenging the West, which in turn is being gutted by its oligarchs. Well, the solution is simple --- we shall blame Russia. I'm not surprised current relations are worse. Bourgeois Norwegians in particular got a lot of free stuff thanks to the Soviets, back when their ruling class had to prove it could feed, house, educate, and heal everyone "just as well as the commies can, or better."

Part of any impression has a lot to do with expectations, and I frankly did not expect (and did not hope for) such a Westernized country. It's more than just appearances, though. The Orthodox Christians are the most pro-Catholic you will find anywhere. The dress, the food, the books in translation in the big box grocery stores (Elena Ferrante, who else? They were the only novels in the magazine section.). The educated people who frequent bookstores often read Italian anyway.

There were war crimes during the break-up of Yugoslavia -- which also include some staged to make it appear as though a particular side had committed a war crime when in fact it hadn't, or at least not that time. Come to think of it, though, bombing Serb cities which had well-established anti-Milosevic governments already in place with Depleted Uranium warheads simply because of their ethnic makeup, and notwithstanding their spirited resistance to the Milosevic regime, certainly smells like an attempt at genocide -- perhaps comparable to that espoused by Hitler under his Aryan doctrines? Some genes are better than others, some say.
