  5. THANK YOUUUUU!!! FFS, it's very simple; a light coating of grease will do wonders, but far too often techs use too much, and over time it collects contaminants in the atmosphere and it gums up! Short term, everything is great, but long term, too much grease does more harm than good because it gums up the works, and over time definitely will lead to seized calipers; among other problems.

  9. The only thing that ever makes me REEEE on this one is the fact Ray doesn't open the bleeder screw when compressing calipers (IE: not doing it 'by the book'). Granted, it only happens once in a blue moon, but forcing too much of old fluid back through the hydraulic system can lead to problems down the road. Plus, that's just how I was taught to do it back in tech school. Even if you don't have to bleed the brakes, it's still a good idea to flush the lines on a somewhat regular basis because like all things petroleum based, it too breaks down over time and needs to be changed.

  10. The thing about Ray is, the actually work itself is more or less uncut, unlike many other channels that use clever editing to get around it. When it comes to the PITA jobs like this, you see 'em start to finish. Also, your son might want to look into Semis for a career choice because Class 8 trucks are SOOOO much easier to work on! Not to mention, average annual pay is always going to be higher because you're working on commercial equipment! Even though I had 5 semesters of auto, and plenty of experience turning wrenches doing other jobs in the industry, working on tractors and trailers was the most fun I've ever had in my professional life!

  12. This is just how business is done and Snap-On isn't going to argue over a single pair of pliers and risk losing business. Napa, O-Reilly's Uh-oh Zone; they all have the same policy on lifetime warranty of parts for the same reason. Not to mention the additional money you'll spend while inside the truck while getting a new pair. Economically, it's a small price to pay.

  14. I always just made sure they were stacked facing the same direction, that way you can gently pop it out from behind with a chisel being careful not to damage the new race, usually by wrapping the end of the chisel in a red shop towel.

  17. When it comes to radiator mounting brackets, I just loosen the bolt with a box end, and just swing it out the way! Also, when it comes to hoses and clamps, channel locks are yer friend, and more effective when cracking it loose by twisting it on the nipple. tl;dr = Hehe...nipple!

  18. Usually the PROM inside the PCM doesn't lose that info as it's stored in solid state memory and it requires a specific procedure to reset the programmable memory.

Minor note on the Wheel speed sensor clip: This looks like one of those fancy Euro designs that are designed to allow you to pre-install the clip onto the component in the provided groves, and it will hold itself in place. After that, it'll use the spring's tension to click itself into place once you push them together.

  27. RAY!! DON'T FORGET!!! Every time you turn the key on, the PCM flashes the sensor elements inside the MAF really quickly to burn off any contaminants on the elements present, and this does cause them to wear out over time, and the sensor just gets lazy.

  30. Working on larger trucks is actually a lot easier than working on late model cars because you have enough clearance you can actually get to everything....unless it's from the rust belt in which case I wish you luck!

  37. That was actually my second thought because I was wondering if underside access would be easier; if not, probably the wheel well. Yota's do tend to be a little bit more service friendly and quite often provide alternate routes, so to speak. tl;dr = Even guys w/ decades of experience should still RTM once in a while.

  45. Okay, I hate to be 'that guy' but I gottah be the one to go 'REEEEEE', because, as much as he runs his mouth, Scotty DOES have a point regarding a trans flush. If you do it regularly, it's fine, there's no problem, but when it's gone over 100K without a service, there are many particulate metals suspended in the fluid, and doing a trans flush CAN ruin a tranny. tl;dr = Scotty is right in that sometimes a tranny flush will do more harm than good, but if you follow the manufacturer recommendations, you'll be fine.

  46. Pro tip: Use bread! No, seriously! If you don't have a pilot bear puller attachment for the slide hammer, just start packing down the inner cavity with bread, and then use a hammer and chisel to pack it in until it's so tight, it pushes it out from the inside.

  47. Pro tip: When removing stuck hoses like the one for the radiator, twist it on the nipple first to crack it loose before trying to pull it off. I always use a pair of channel locks opened up to one of the widest settings when twisting it.
