I know everyone uses "europe" as shorthand for "continental europe" but lots of people say/used to say "the continent" instead, which I think is much better. Using "europe" has made seemingly quite a few people (not you, of course) confused about what europe and EU is...

  3.  @mistycrom  If it is a Galant, its using a Lancer bodyshell. Look a bit closer and you will see, there is no mistaking it, the front indicator shape gives it away directly, naming one thing thats easy to spot in the video. Anyway, even if it it uses a Galant drivetrain it has to be said to be a Lancer anyway, considering its a unibody car. That means the bodyshell denotes car model. Similar to how the well known Ford Escort cosworth is still an Escort, even though it uses Sierra underpinnings and drivetrain.

  4. Yeah, being formula 1 they even calculate for the effect brake temp has on tire pressures at all times during the race (because of indirectly increasing air temps). Quite some years ago I believe their was a bit of hubbub of some teams running rims with some special materials and shapes to better control tire pressure and temps the way they wanted from the brake heat.

The Suzuki Swift, and Suzukis in general are known as some of the best cars around, if one simply is looking for " a car" that does car stuff and dont need much else. As is the case for most people, if they didnt have non-car considerations when they buy their cars. Suzukis are generally very reliable, very economical, and quite cheap to buy. I would say that counts for something...

  13. I own a few vehicles that I have done closer to 300km/h on normal roads with, but never quite above 300, so far. Funny thing is how the indicated speed differs between the vehicles. The Porsche is about 8km/h at top speed, which is very good. The BMW about 15km/h which is good/normal, and the motorcycle is about 30km/h optimistic, which is a lot, but normal for older motorcycles.

  14.  @Jaibee27  Yep, seen casey stoner and others. I have been into "performance" bikes since 1992, and currently own four of them. A good rider can hold their own against many production based race cars in corners, as I said. It all depends what the comparison is.

  22.  @JustmeandB  I change the oil in my mothers sandero diesel every year, but she does 15000 miles in a yer, or a bit more. No issue considerng her driving pattern. Almost exclusively highway. Car is on 200k miles and going strong, exactly as one would expect.

  23.  @poplaurentiu4148  The toughness and strength of the car was never in question, even since mk1, more or less. The Drivetrain and system are no less sturdy than the best the mainstream automotive industry could offer. Its quite stout, for what it is. So A rally raid (I am very aware of the one you describe) is no problem. The problem of this car arises as it ages. Its not stuff that breaks because of physical impacts, but rather electrical problems and engine problems caused by long term heat cycling, moisture and age.

But as I said, during Tourist drives its classed as a regular road, so anything thats highway legal is welcome. Dont think there is anything to do about that if they want to keep regular road legal status, which is what enables people running their everyday car or RV or whatever without any special race licence, vehicle inspenction, or protective gear in the first place.

  28.  @justincase9471  Fair enough, I remember seeing, assuming you are correct which I am sure you are, what was probably a bike only session at the GP track, but at least back then there was no indication of it being so in official documentation or schedule. Perhaps thats changed these days. I guess there might be some nuance and spectrum to what their operating licence allows. Just curious, might I ask a bit about what vehicle you use and some quick summary about it?

  31.  @dnocturn84  Hi. I will adress the points you made in the order you made them. It does take about 500hp or so give or take for most cars that are likely to have that level of power. A far less powerful car cant do it, because of the power it takes to overcome the rolling friction and aerodynamic drag that speed generates. Most cars that feature that level of power also have the gearing to go above 200mph wihout hitting any rev limiter. Any modern car with 200mph top speed from factory feature brakes and chassis capable of doing so, though this is irrelevant to the statement posed. Conclusion: Effectively its almost exclusively a question of having enough power, which so happens to be about 500hp or a bit more for most medium sized cars. As was stated in my first post. If you still doubt it, you can look up the formulas for calculating the power requirement for the top speed of a vehicle to a very close approximation yourself, the formula can be found by google search without much trouble. The gearing question is also easily verified by googling the drivetrain data of cars that feature said 500hp or above, there arent that many in the european market. Cheers mate.

  32. For those watching that arent boat guys: if you hit the water at the speeds they are going, it can very well be deadly just from the forces. No, a life preserver isnt going to help much either, its to prevent you from drowning, not pure impact damage from hitting the water.

  34. Those rules makes perfect sense. That gets me wondering what the optimal car would be... of more well know cars, its got to be hard to beat a bug up there, only thing its missing is more suspension travel. Maybe also stuff like old Skodas and other reasonably light rear engined cars. Curious to see how a 2CV would do.. probably very good for a FWD car.

  37. Pretty sure those tires got way too tall studs to be street legal anywhere in the EU at least. I guess they could be ok in other places that doesnt have regulation that cover studded tires to begin with.

As for the other two examples, local peculiarities exist everywhere (applies to example number 1 as well), Nothing exclusive to the US, These exact cases could happen everywhere in the west and English speaking world, and if you dont think so you are either simply not sufficiently informed on how stuff like this when it comes to single instances works in the real world, no offence. A single story about something strange when it comes to law enforment and legal system can be dug up from pretty much everywhere in the world.

  43. Really old 1910s race cars like this are badass. Its an event every time you see, hear, feel(!) and smell (!!) them. I have been lucky enough to visited goodwood FOS and the sinsheim museum that houses Brutus and seen quite a few.

  44.  @ned_1963  I was talking about the "bad handling" part. No, the smaller capacity engines elsewhere are driven by higher fuel prices and tax reasons mostly, i.e costs. Americans have their own interests, F1 isnt big and Rally non existent, more or less. Hence a smaller pool of talent and lack of US sponsors.
