  1. One should always judge an engine's performance by it's efficiency. Power or torque per quantity of fuel burned. Overall quality would have to be some sort of rating system for the above, as well as, weight, and reliability. Though, weighting the significance of each category would be difficult and have to be subjective to an extent.

  13. It's only boring if you make it that way. A toyota corolla is horribly borring, but a lamborghini is the opposite. Why would you expect an electric Nissan to be less boring than a BMW?

  14. I want to see video of different braking techniques on ice now. Aren't you curious what the difference in stopping distance between slamming on the brakes, pulsing the brakes, and gradually increasing braking pressure?

  17. Valtra103 There are ten year old vehicles using stop-start. Why not just look it up? Then you'd know... though either way, the result is not necessarily the case for all of them. But if the batteries have lasted you at least know it is possible.

  18. ​ @Plur307  generally speaking If you don't know what it is, it's best not to start throwing out difinitive diagnosis immediately. Identify where the sound is coming from, what type of sound it is, and when it occurs or what causes a change. Then you know where to look. It would be embarassing if you convinced someone to get a new cylinder head and it was caused by something loose and shaking. It is definitely annoying when you have someone get angry over the fact that there might be something wrong with their new thing. They tend to people take it personally by assuming that you are trying to tear them down, not just caution them. Of course, someone who is prejudiced and making complaint after complaint, (regardless of how small, or insignificant) is also very annoying. Regardless, if you get a new car, and it starts making strange sounds, or acting strangely, take it in right away.

  19.  @arrowmouse  Well it sounds like it at least has more value than a smart car. Those were small as well but unreliable and worse on gas than a cheaper, larger, more powerful, and better handling car. So you weren't really gaining anything except expenses and nuisance. This though, maximum efficiency.

  20.  @macnlz  like detroit electric. They had nice looking concept passenger cars, then they fizzled out, then they made a car that was basically the old tesla Roadster... and where are they now?? Zenn almost 2 decades ago... People want electric cars and have for a long time, even with range constraints, but there are huge barriers to entry in the auto manufacturing market. It's really too bad they don't do more to help new entrants, meanwhile they repeatedly bail out large companies (some of whom can't manage their business *cough Chrysler *cough*).

  27. In the interest of range, wouldn't it be better to have a clutch that disengages whenever you aren't accelerating? (Also, to use more regenerative braking when quick decel is needed.... on models where regen is at the hub)

  29. So backfiring used to only refer to the banging from explosions occuring in the exhaust... occasionally with actual fire. That goes all the way back to the dawn of cars. You would see it a lot with antiques puttering along and then BANG. But now we apply it to the crackle also. Is it the same thing to different extents? Should we have different terms? Someone says "backfire", and you think junk car, engine problems. But if you say exhaust crackle you think of that lovely sound after letting off the throttle.

  31. Wow 181... and everyone talked to me like I was ridiculous for pointing out the hp was lower than it should be compared to other modern engines (of similar displacement), even other Mazdas. Especially considering it was runs on premium.

  33. Yes let's all re-learn how engine works to come to a logical conclusion. Turbo chargers are different sizes, internals can be different, intercoolers, manifolds, fuel type (and therefore timing advance)... water injection, etc.

  35. It would be to see the numbers. I would never drive without one, but it obviously makes a huge difference. I had my filter box out while painting and the A:F ratio went from fine to too lean. (Note: my car is old and does not adjust like a modern one would. If the MAF is all the way open but with extra air, that extra air is unmeasured).

  36. These would be perfect for my father (2 hip replacements, I guess he would recommend it haha). Having forced stops would probably allow him to drive further in a day and my mother wouldn't have to feel bad asking for pee breaks every couple hours.

  37. Compared to previous generation Z06s it's not offering a whole lot more engine. But, it looks significantly better, and the rear suspension has been brought to this century. So it is a bit expensive (~$30k), but I don't think it's unrealistically expensive. It is a performance bargain... but still of bargain manufacturing quality.

  42. Basically it boils down to the fact that the energy consumption of the Model 3 is so much lower than the Raptor that it is still a net reduction, after all of the system losses.

I want all the manufacturers to pool their resources to design a final farewell (or a few, because variation in approaches would be pursued in the process) to the combustion engine, by making the most efficient engine possible combining the most efficient designs (HCCI, opposed pistons, electric turbochargers, etc.). There are diminishing returns when combining these, but I still want to see it... or them, because again, likely a few different approaches will likely yield the same result.
