  5. For anyone who could read the old traditional chinese character sets... and if they read wikipedia, and then the chinese format as well... I think there is a mega big mistranslation which went on. I am beginning to think that this was deliberately done. How could the situation get so bad ?? All I know is that, historically speaking, and we are talking about going way back into the 2000 BC (before Christ)... back then, there were the people who lived near the two main rivers of China. The Yellow River, and the Yangzte.... These are, and most people classify as Hans.. or "Xia" (or.... "Hua" in Cantonese).... because... Either you could argue that, they were the same set of people, or were two sets. Some of these people moved upwards to be Northern, and population what became Korea, and Mongolian etc. However, there was this other oddball migration from the West China... which were actually from Europe !! It is this group, which brought the "dynastic model"... and Imperialism... Somehow, their dynastic model... became like a national model or other.. but then not everyone knew or accepted this. Hence, the continuous fightings and so forth... and then inter-marriages and "gifting" when the war was won, or if you took one side over another etc. This is why when ROC won the "Middle Kingdom" briefly... it only accepted that China had 5 major races. Not 56 tribes !!!! And the 56 tribes are kept getting state benefits... and now, the CCP members want to migrate them, and turn them into economic slaves... and move them into urban areas, in order to boost GDPs etc. This is why people are rebelling... From zero debt, to high debt. Outrageous.

And yet... people keep wanting to use this piece of city.. as an actual leverage to their own finances, back in their homes.   19. ​ @jchantw : It depends on which crowd, you're talking about. There's the old style Cantonese sad operatic style songs... Which is semi making a comeback. There's the old Spanish based Argentinian tango but with Cantonese lyrics. This is quite lived by a certain crowd. I could see why they feel this is modern. It does sound modern to my ears. Then there's the 80s English pop slash metal slash rock.... I didn't know that HK had soft rock as early as the 60s.... That is extremely modern... I'd like to see more of this style ? Bring back the retro. Then there's the new of EDMs, dance, or Canton disco... Grunge was in HK at one point too.

Meeting their friends or fans. It's common. I suppose the similar style in HK is the Cantonese opera.... That is a regular event too.

  22. HK was a developed state, or city state, when it was under the British commonwealth model... with its own extensive banking networks of other commonwealth countries. But it stopped being this, when it tried to become an actual IFC... with its own UN level financing.. and to increase cashflows of actual.... banks. To make it fluid. But then, this doesn't work out, when you also have a big and large local government... actually... that conflicts with the banking aspect as well.... so...and the land was owned by the oligarchs and not the actual government.. or to be bought and sold.. so this, from this angle, this is actually confusing. It is neither a bond to be borrowed against, or even to be depreciated with... and then it isn't a personal wealth... It conflicts between two areas, which many countries and financial centres doesn't have. And SCMP did not used to be a newspaper either.. it was related to some trade only..... with shipping...

  23.  @adnyc82  : It's funny that you mentioned that period of time, because that was also the post war period... and the USA then experienced actual Big Depression... which is what is indeed also now happening with HK as well. Just that, when the financial or the Asian financial crash happened... Japan took care, and they retreated and defended themselves, even though they were economically depressed for a long time. They stayed and managed life. Whereas South Korea was kind of in decline, but didn't... And now, the same with HK as well... The people didn't stay in HK as well.. Cos they kept wanting to go round and to keep on rotating.. but these individuals, doesn't realise that, taxes, and lockdowns.. is supposed to tie YOU to pay the taxes TO a specific land...   25. It is not cheaper to produce them. It is more money to produce them. Did you know that people only focused on the RMB... Versus local currency ratios. But if you used the old exchange rate. That bottle of soya sauce is the inflated product. It costs around a million yuan per bottle.. and yet.. nobody shouts out about that at all. People inside the mainland experienced hyper inflation and was helped to reduce it, and yet ...this is not acceptable .. to see local HK products flourish..... This is ridiculous !

  34. It is also a phenomena as well.. the less amount of Cantonese speakers living in HK... the worst the standard it would be ? So.... and people cannot learn the language at all... or, if at all ?.... In the 1980s.. we used to have great fantastic children that could speak fluent Cantonese. And then things changed slowly around 1990s... And then.. now that, people wanted to integrate with the mainland as well.... (some individuals deliberately dumb down the classes too).... So that they are teaching you wrong things.. in order for themselves to get ahead. So... There isn't even the standards any more. Cos frankly, i t isn't going to happen? Cos most people have given up. Cos they were basically betrayed and pushed out. So now.. nobody really cares what you teach. Sometimes it is about balancing... but the balance is now toppled. More non-speakers wanting to speak and to teach.. and the real speakers have left.

And inside the PRC. This.. is stopping people from working to get a job and to survive cos they just changed the Cantonese words .   36.  @thecrab3128  : Cantonese, is what English speakers know the language as in HK. But in reality, the correct assumption and fact should be that, people in HK speaks "Yue".... To say that somebody in HK speaks Cantonese, is kind of romanising the word "Yue" as Cantonese instead. Just because it's in the English dictionary. The reason why people are kicking up a fuss in HK.. is because, BECAUSE of overseas' pressures from Westerners as well as countries like Singapore and Malaysia and Taiwan.... who speaks fuijian/hakka/"mandarin".... now, their assumption is that, HK should too. When it should not. Cos they are different race of people. All you need to know is that, the Hakka (fuijianese) moved and was from the shipping city too of Fuzhou.... and because they kind of invaded HK a little bit as well.. and spread to Taiwan and also spread to Singapore... And some into Malaysia as well.. they also WANT to invade to HK too. This is why, some people pushes back quite a bit ! There are some Hakka people in HK who blends in by speaking Cantonese, so that people assume that they are Cantonese/Bai Yue people.. when they are not. It is all to do with trade, and money, and capitalism etc etc.... It is not asking for special treatment, it is telling others to "back off".... from invasion.

  41. I hope that he finds a location. Whether it is a shared one with some of the other cultural workshops as well. Has he considered maybe sharing a workshop space with somebody? Tidy up his store, and then file all his admin stuff into one place. And then reframe those lovely photos. Or to use them to create a new and creative cover and nice and modern card. (Or a traditional card.) Then create a newer and simple but modern website to let his customers know. Then have an opening light buffet party or something, for a low price, and let his friends mingle and chit chat about their mah jong gaming experiences. Can do a "mah jong" chit chat dim sum midnight snack night/podcasts as well... ! Lots of things to do... !

  45. China is stuck because.. the smartest people that they need, they already have inside the company. So then.. outside the company. They don't have the knowledge or the creators? So it ends up top heavy. If this was the situation... what a "free market" like the USA would do.. is to kick out those people... and then those people enter the actual market.. and they create or demand from the manufacturers... products that they want. But because China is a closed, and tightly controlled "state-owned enterprises" as well.... This is what normally happens. They are kind of kowtowing, and somewhat blinded. This is why... they would always want overseas people... Cos they have better idea sometimes. But doing this... also invite social harassments from the locals too. Cos then, they don't even actually... they will resent the overseas' candidates in getting the job, but not themselves ???.... And by right, the teaching sector should focused on continually.. keep repeating the next 10 year's goals to the kids and the children.. but of course, forward planning is not a thing in China. Cos they plan bakcwards... mostly on the national level.. and not on the local level upwards. Some said that was what happened... but in reality... well... Now people are lost. Cos you cannot trump... the future.. by doing the everything now. And not earn to keep and to create a future? In some smart countries.. They will use the "wrong methods for 10 years to hold the forte"... only for the next turning point... the year 11... for the next generation to do. This is what other countries does. Of course.. And it is related to mah jong.. and then it could be a cartoon, a storyline, or it could be a maths game. Published and released. Simple, isn't it? But the thing is... HK society is like that, people do not necessarily live or help one another cohesively... and to be fair. People possibly do not relate to one another, as in families.. so they deliberately won't help either. Plus a lot of transient people always.. So.. double won't help. Everybody has their own agendas, and their own goals in life etc. If you go against that flow, people often shouts, and antagonise, and even possibly harm you in some ways. Especially if they find out that you earn more than they do. It is a harder time now to.. earn and to create an economy...

  47. Yes, this is what happened... cos someone think that the city needs more, so the original settlers... were kind of left in the lurch... and are often, pushed or forced to leave... Given some money, which is not even enough to stay in the city. (Often, these villages are remote, and the people are uneducated... so are tricked on the price point, as well as... how to get on in life afterwards....) This is how things happen... and a family unit is destroyed. It creates bad feelings, in society. If someone went to your hometown, gave you a lie, and sold your family house... and then trashed the grave. Would you not feel angry ??? I would.

And those individuals also don't tend to integrate with those others either. And they have their own business circles etc... And THIS is also why things are going wrong too. Whereas if you see what is going on in the UK. You can indeed see a mixture of different cuisines in mainstream locations.. and then more specialists in other areas etc. So...
