Mandarin is a UN-forced language, in order to "raise" the profile of China. And this, is one of those distasteful thing that most educated chinese like myself, knew about the country, from an academic point of view, and we knew exactly what was changed, what, when and why. Mandarin as it is stands today is close to Min Nam language. Which is now, overriding so many local dialects as well. In fact, it has eroded other local languages already. And no, China is not of one single race. It is actually of several different races !!! And people still refuse to connect which region is of which race, and why. The English texts which one can find online is only a small extension into a large united country. China, should be seen as an actual UN in, and of itself !!! This is why SO many people HATE this Western brainwashing idea of "this is a singular country". Just because the government tried to unify and picked one language to communicate with, by NO means that it means the erosion of local languages and heritages as well !!! They cannot do that ! In fact, this has been proposed to be unacceptable at the national level !!!!!
So whenever I see people speak out about "you MUST learn mandarin and mandarin only".. I call this BS !!!!

@Shenzhou. : Well, that is because, Singapore is a small country... and the fact that it took a long time to settle the country and to fight to reduce down the number of languages, to suddenly, for a single person, to overthrow the entire system again ? How is that even be possible ? Even in the UK... a lot of people used to speak more Cantonese... and then some people speak Hakka (which is a little bit similar to already Wu/ Mandarin)... BUT.. some people INSIST that, they speak the SMALL selective set of characters, and write in the simplified form. PLEASE ! STOP THIS ! If you speak your own dialect, when abroad, amongst other chinese, from different regions. I think you will get more respect !!!!
In Singapore, people speak "Hokkien", "Fuijian"... although, they are not official a real language, but those regions uses and base it on Wu... "mandarin" is a hybrid language, which has deviated from Wu and is adding mongolian syntax (language logic) into it !!!! This is WHY any REAL Chinese will reject this syntax !!! Cos it is mongolian !!!! And if you trace back the mongolian heritage, it goes back to like Siberian or something... or is it Arabic ??? To me, these people are trying to protect the real Hans or Middle Kingdom language, while SOME people tried to bastardise it further.

ONE single person, went above AND beyond, an entire region, actually, several region's sentiments. For me to see a child today, from the mainland, not to be able to write a single chinese character, using full brush stroke is almost like a joke of the day. @Shenzhou. : "China proper" has 18 provinces ! And NONE of them, speaks "mandarin" !!! Cos that is from mongolian language, with some random Mongol words in it ! The syntax is also different to proper traditional chinese !!!

Why should that Singaporean who could maybe speak Wu, or even Min or Gan, be forced to speak a mongolian language ??? Why ? Why would people like me, not know chinese, or know about HK, or even know the history of China ? Since the British allowed HK citizens to freely go in and out of the UK and to HK thoroughout the years ?? Most people built their own homes, and went back. Trading ships did not mean that the workers were allowed to stay cos they were working. So why wouldn't people dock and live at home after a long period of time ?? Everybody makes choices. Yes, you are correct, I could have gone back to HK before, but after I realised that it crashed. For me, I decided to stay in the UK. My family is split between the UK and HK. Even if one area is poor.. At least we can look after the other family. This is my intention. So do not berate others until you have walked in someone else's shoes !! Look at China now ! How many people would help their own families out ? Even the SAME son.. would put down his own father, and force HIM out of a job. I read about that story, and I could not believe it. It was so bad. I have absolutely no guilt at all... The UN was never this big before, and if it was not for the likes of Sun Yat Sen... who tried to bridge the gaps.. and tried to unify the country, and turned people Nationalistic, which is the China Proper part.. then would they have risen to power today ? Cos they have been slowly eroded of their heritage ! Mongolian scripts are not used. And they have been split as well. Inner Mongolia split from Outer Mongolia. And that, they write and use a version of Russian Ping Yum... and not even speak and is not supported to learn their own language. And Russia kept them as slaves. He did, and people in China, does not know what alphabet or which country, and which country's history it belongs to. Cos they cannot explain to you, even if you tell them that they are wrong. Find a map of the US from the 1500s. Then you will find out who the Native Americans were.... A lot of them were migrants from Siberia..and from Russia... This is why they look white. In Europe, at least, Europe had a system and it was fair, and it still gave legitimacies to those who were related to the past Kings or Noble people. But in China today... Some of the noble tribes, their chiefs and their people, are marginalised and classified as "Hans".. cos they look "chinese", but their DNA show people that, they have been exclusive, and are the true descendents of the land. Beyond the current ruling class today. Before the central beijing, and before the provincial governors, and CCP members... And all of these people now, are to be expected, to serve and "pay rent"... back to the state. This is the thing.
Because these people have no way to express themselves... in any authority and in any actual position and meetings of an international level. This is why their marginalisation is overlooked by so many people.

Some of these studies, which was taken, from an outsider, kept and preserved a lot of items, which SO many were changed inside of China. Even now the old artefacts, most are stolen, and lost as well. In the UK alone, the people who were from the British land.. are actually, Anglo-Saxon/Dutch with Catholics, Romans, and with a few minority from Scandinavia... Mandarin cannot be the single "national" language. Cos the number of people is too large ! There should be "regional/national language". For example, Canton, should speak Yue. Fuijian should speak Min as the national language.
Why does a chinese country have so many English speakers ? Why ??? For copying with ??? Why don't people speak their regional majority language ? And let those people, participate in defining the written form, and the speaking form, and let them discuss it out between them. Why should a single small unit of people, in China... forces, millions of people to comply, to their mind and their brain's thinking and concept ??? NOBODY would kowtow to that !!!!!! To empower people, is to uplift people, is to make them find their roots, and their own identities... People are too obsessed with money. And they are to obsessed with building large scale projects, and not just local and regional projects, which they SHOULD have done. Otherwise, the country would not be losing money so much....

It is that, China IS so big, it is 1.4 BILLION people. How can everybody talks the same, when in actual reality, it is around at least 50 odd "nations", the king of most European countries. Average size of a European country is between 30 to 60 million people. China has around 1.4 BILLION people. The original intention was to split it down to 27 nations. Even though, why do you think that they are called "province" ? Each "province" is actually the size of an European country. So no.. there should not be a single language. There should be united by regional language. And why does a country like China, cannot even stick to their regional language, as the most important first, and then decide on other sub languages, on a "need to" basis ???
The reason why "mandarin" had gotten to the UN level, IS because of crappy lies and stupid mistakes... Cos it allowed the Europeans to asssume that this whole area, was under one single rule, and one single nation. When in reality, it is under several nations, and several actual family-trees and ties. DNA maps now show this and had proven this to be the case also. So how can a small group of people, over run and bulldozed over the rest ??? It makes no sense !
Sorry... I am defending my city, and my province, in the eyes of this international audience.. and you.. You are kowtowing, to this person's assumptions, and their prejudices above your own people, and those local people as well. It would help, if you dispelled that myth !!! This subject should NOT be written by a foreigner to begin with. Cos he is not the subject of expertise ! The chances of lies, is high ! So you are reading an article by a foreigner... on a subject... which he is not the expert of.. and do you see any other foreign readers here online ? @taimingchan8818 : They do not speak Cantonese, is because their parents are NOT from the cantonese region, and have heritages there. If these citizens understood things.. then they would know that, you are supposed to stay in and near your hukuo. i.e. The land that was gifted and given to your ancestors. Due to wars, or whatever, many people run away from their hometowns.. so much so that, they then actually degrade.. and steal.. someone else's family homes or whatever. Some people in China, say this is fine. Cos they changed the law to say that, everybody or everyone's land, is owned by the government. But in reality, this is NOT true ! Some local provincial laws, could be explicit and apply to a small region, and not the entire whole areas.. so person A, could have interpreted whatever whatever, when they socially move from location A to B.
US has around 300 million people. Their perception is to unite more and more people. But China should NOT do that !! And I do not think that China does that, at all. Cos all regions are its own sovereignty and right... They are gifted the land. (i.e. Either ancestors worked hard for them, or that their ancestor was some kind of military/scholar man.) It belongs to them. They can live and farm as long as they like. Cos it belongs to them. Nobody can take this away from them.
