Such a disastrous event could trigger the nation into the mindset that would lead to the rise of a Fascist dictator. (Just as it did in Europe when the effects of the Great Depression hit them.) The US was very lucky as we got a social democrat (FDR) that halted such mindsets by alleviating the effects of the Depression for the middle and working classes and kept both Fascist and Communist movements at bay. (Mainland Europe was not so lucky..)
