So calling out woke culture is actually quite refreshing because it seems no one has the guts to otherwise. Unless you are fine with woke? Unless you are happy with mass immigration, increasing balkanisation, increasing lawlessness, all that while having to check your privilege?

  9. It is essential to reform citizenship laws and abolish lex soli. Citizenship should only be acquired either through parentage (lex sanguinis) or naturalisation.

  19.  @shelleyphilcox4743  while you are not wrong, I was referring more to a downside at the level of the individual rather than at the institutional or governmental level. Notice that societies where individual freedoms are valued over those of the group, the onus is on the institutions/governments to take care of each and every individual. With the advent of the "human rights" paradigm and the nanny state, the downside is that some people have become self-entitled, indifferent to their fellow citizens, and thus politically illiterate.

  20.  @nizviz  you're off the point. Whether in the EU or not, UK politics is completely embedded in these international organisations. We are still members of the Council of Europe and the ECHR, which are not part of the EU. The British government signs every single UN convention, the Marrakesh Pact on migration a good example. That's why leaving the EU was not the answer, nothing has changed for the better since brexit.

  22.  @iaf010  I was pointing out the paradoxes in your argumentation. You can't state that the UK and other Western countries have hugely benefited economically from mass legal migration and then point out issues relating to affordable housing and law & order. To me, this doesn't add up. Your assertion about the huge economic benefits of legal migration is often disputed. Immigrants are not a monolith. Your point also disregards the cultural and educational baggage (or lack thereof) of the said immigrants - and their descendants. Now if you think economic benefit is limited to GDP growth, you might have a point. On housing, demand drives house prices up, so a fast expanding population resulting from continuing high levels of Immigration pushes up demand (concentrated in urban areas) resulting in pauperisation. Finally, pauperisation leads to the necessity for more public spending to support an ever growing number of "mouths to feed". This in itself is a hellish spiral. And now the best bit, economic prosperity is only possible if there is trust between the members of a society, or if there is law & order. You don't build a prosperous society by bringing in people with various different cultures who have little to no interest in integrating, this will ultimately create friction that can only damage an economy.

  37. This is all very well but there are more substantive British traditions that need preserving, such as: freedom of thought and speech, a certain sense of humour (these are interrelated). Pageantry and symbolism can easily disappear into insignificance and become folklore. I'm otherwise happy to support the monarchy if I know what the monarchy stands for...
