  4.  @claudiachance7036 So sorry to read about your situation. If you have anything of value, try selling asap. I’m friends with someone who has a resale shop, so I’ve been bartering with them on things that’ll I’ll need to make van life easier. Also, sleep in your vehicle a couple of nights, to see if there’s ways to make it more comfortable & efficient. I wish you the best of luck & health.

  5. 8 years ago (I remember distinctly bc me & my neighbor were both diagnosed with cancer at that time) my neighbor & I would have the lunch special at the mom & pop seafood place every week & the entire bill was $12. One day he was wanting a slushy thing from Sonic, he got a slushy, burger & fries, & I had only a coke & tatter tots… the entire bill came to $24.

  6. That’s my problem: I lived in my dream place for the first 12 years, then it became overcrowded & noisy (like everywhere else), & whenever I go to look at places, I decide that I’m just as well off staying put.

  9. I’m guessing bc the 80s introduced us to many useless things that sparkle & have fleeting value. Children of the 80s & 90s know no different, & if they’re middle class, they’re in the highest tax bracket, which makes them angry about those who are dependent upon government. In the 90s I was contracted to drive the blind into the city for their job training. I had a friend who came from a huge family that was by no means wealthy, but she got lucky bc her dad had connections that got her an extremely well paying government job… she actually said to me, “They’re using my money to transport blind people to school?!”. Yeah, we’re supposed to be a civil society, for which the government was intended to work.

  13.  @TLA123y6f I worked in the mobile home industry during the housing crisis of 2008/2009, & that’s the time that corporations started swooping in. John Oliver did an hour on this a couple years ago (could have gone on for 12 hours), it’s something that everyone needs to see, especially if they’re considering a mobile home.

  24. Surprised at Texas having an average of $1,100 SS. I’ve known many, from the ship channel all the way to Amarillo, who worked the oil fields, pipelines, offshore, refineries, chemical plants, & NASA… most of whom have passed away & most of whom lived entirely off SS with their pensions being leftovers. But I guess those days are all but over.

  26. I was a teen who held an after school part time job in the 3rd largest city in the country, when no one was open 24/7, except for a couple of taxis & one coffee shop. I, also, earned enough at that PT fast food job to save up for a car within two months. 30 years later, & I was having to pay 4x as much just to register an old jalopy, than I paid for my 1st, 2nd, & 3rd used car. Today my house is valued the same as what one of my clients just received from insurance on a 2-yr-old truck that was still drivable (driven to San Antonio & back to Houston a couple of times before the insurance decided to total it) & looked no less worthy than before. This event has left me completely despondent.

  27. Since I’m catching up with you in age, most the vanlifers I watch are much younger, & there’s always a small percentage of old women objecting to certain things in their videos. But there’s always some unbalanced men hitting on them, telling them how they shouldn’t dress & acting as though they’re married to girls. Evidently y’all are able to block them, bc I see their comments disappear, but they often return under another name. There’s hundreds of thousands of YouTube channels that post daily, maybe they should move on until they find one they like.

  30. Ever heard of bird flu - there’s been a continuous epidemic of factory farms that have been destroying millions of chickens for one bird being tested positive. They get huge insurance payoffs & subsidies, whether or not they jump the gun. Also, the price of feed has increased significantly since the pandemic.

  31. I’m just a wee bit younger & probably more bullheaded. I don’t want to be a burden to anyone either, so I’ll tell you what a handsome trucker told me years ago, “Baby, there are people who want to help. You make them feel bad when you won’t let them.”. I’ve repeated that in my head so many times that I’m now beyond help, because I never took the advice.

  42. I wondered that too, but then it could be he moved away when he became an adult or the church has dissolved. Still, as many churches as there are out there, looks like one would welcome him. I practiced Buddhism for a few years, & it gave me peace of mind during some tough times, but then I was invited to the temple… it is massive, & statues bring to mind a superstitious primitive era. After that I started noticing roadside humongous statues popping up on prime real estate. One erected a 19’er with smaller ones scattered about, shortly after, all started toppling over & soon was abandoned. Looked ridiculous before, now it’s a hideous eyesore of silliness.

  48. Sorry about that jerk, I grew up around quite a few. Was listening to “Skews” last Tuesday, about 3 states that declined children a free meal (even though it’s a federally funded program). As he said, “It’s an investment in, not only in the children’s future, but the nation as a whole.”. He was able to repay way more back in bc of the federally funded education & food that he received as a child. Basically about to be in your situation, even though I was fortunate enough to find a place owner financed & being extremely frugal, a bout with cancer left me with no savings, unable to maintain it, & city encroachment is such that I’m unable to afford to bring it up to code — city wants more than I paid for the place to access services. So to sell, might leave me with enough to find a reliable car. Would have moved elsewhere, years ago, had there been anywhere else I could have lived cheaper — been hearing single woman saying the same for 15 years now.

  50. It’s a weird thing that happens when people come into money, they forget what it’s like not to have any… there’s been studies about it. I’ve been good friends with someone for over 40 years who became a young widow… I know she knows what it’s like not to have any money… but whenever I was diagnosed with cancer (right after a fall that broke both wrist) & wasn’t able to work for a year, she was trying to tell me what to do with money I didn’t have. Nine months after surgery I was able to walk to the 99¢ store, but didn’t have enough money to purchase one item.
