Hold your tongue, man! That is Project Fear! Oh, wait, it is already Here... 😂😂😂
7
The only thing in the UK that is really amazing is its humor. That troupe led by Bozo the Clown is absolutely hilarious.
7
Considering that she is from immigrant stock, her hypocrisy is mind-boggling.
7
@michaeloconnor2603 You should perhaps look up the meaning of the word "sarcasm"...
7
As a rule, Right-wing parties are voted for out of selfishness and greed. And they bring forth those qualities when in power for too long. "Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold" Happy to see you have a heart.
7
Brexit is not something people get sacked for in business. They get prosecuted for such disasters. Even God Himself will punish those who inflicted this outrage on their own people. As Mr. Tusk said: "I wonder what the special place in Hell looks like for those who promoted Brexit without even a sketch of a plan to carry it out safely." I don't think he was kidding.
7
The question is: when will the Britons have had enough of this incompetent, indifferent government? When will they finally take to the streets?
7
You do not understand them. Tories have no interest in the well-being of the average Johnny English. None what-so-ever. As long as they can be persuaded to tick the right box in the voting booth, for which they have a HUGE propaganda apparatus. The only thing that interests them is how to stay in power, and how to grift as much money out of government and into their Swiss, Cayman and Jersey bank accounts as possible.
7
It is getting harder and harder to keep up appearances. This ship is sinking FAST!
7
Wanting Proportional Representation is like Solomon asking for Wisdom: with PR you get everything else: a modern political system that can effect real change for the good of the country.
7
Like that Iraq minister of propaganda proudly proclaiming decisive victories over the allies each day, except that these victories crept ever closer to Bagdad.
7
I don't think the EU is that worried. There are mechanisms in place to twist the UK's arm in case they truly break the NIP. Case in point: all this hoopla is not in the EU news at all, it is ONLY in the UK news (and the Irish, because they have a direct interest). Not a single news item in the NL, for instance. The concrete point that the DUP & Frosty did bring up (difficult in getting GB food items in N.I. shops) was valid, and it was taken to heart by the EU. Much to the consternation of Frosty who hoped to put the EU in a bad light. Instead, the EU proved itself co-operative and reasonable. The points that Frosty is currently bringing up, however, are NOT valid, and the EU will not yield on them. Thus the change in EU stance.
7
No, EU businesses were ready on 1st January 2019, after long government campaigns warning about the consequences of Brexit.
7
Stagnation? You wish. We are talking collapse here.
7
@richardmetcalfe920 "for a decade if not longer" I saw it happening three decades ago when I lived in the UK, and it has probably been going from even before the UK joined the EU.
7
"Fruit rotting on the trees due to Labour shortages" Indeed, there is a definite shortage of Labour in certain places in the city of Westminster.
7
I love the little reminder Starmer gave the "honourable gentlemen and ladies" opposite of the fact that they, too, can experience severe consequences for their actions.
7
@michaeloconnor2603 On the other hand, they were mighty disappointed when what the EU called red lines, turned out to be, red lines.
7
@zigowl1193 The whole career of the idiot is based on lies.
7
Almost as good as the country that revolted against a Monarch to institute an Emperor.
7
I am fine with this statement, as long as you understand that this process will involve, as preparatory steps, the drastic reform of the UK media and the UK political system. Don't bother asking for candidate status until you have done both.
7
@sebastianwendl603 This "self-sabotage" is a Neo-liberal thing. They believe in "trickle down" economics, which have been proven to be false again and again. They believe that if you help the rich get richer, the wealth will spread to those who are less rich. But history has shown time and time again, that when the rich get richer, everybody suffers. Even the rich. Because the rich will hoard their money instead of letting it circulate in the economy. "The lust for money is the root of all evil"
7
Well done attending, and glad you got some recognition. You definitely deserve it.
7
The Tories never cease to amaze me. They will literally sell their old granny for a quick win.
7
@Willywin Any snowflake can decide to feel hindered or inconvenienced by a protest. Does that mean all protests should be banned? Some people inconvenience me just by breathing. The right to protest is one of the hallmarks of a free state. It is just as important as the right to free speech (i.e. to speak against government without fear of retaliation). When those rights are limited, you know you are well along the way to an authoritarian regime.
7
This was one of the more laughable ideas of the Bozo circus. It would have isolated the UK from the international market at a stroke.
7
If gaslighting could keep you warm, the UK would be in great shape!
6
The EU is busy unblocking it. What is the UK doing?
6
@neilmchardy9061 Oil prices are very quick to rise, slow to come down...
6
The UK should not have invested in more ferry routes. It should have invested in more container handling capacity. Containers don't mind sitting in a dock for a week. A lorry does. And containers can be stacked.
6
Smaller economy also means less tax income, so a government that either has to cut back or raise taxes, or print more money.
6
What you say is probably true. But it is not up to the EU to hold Johnson to account. That is something the British People need to do. The EU is responsible to confront Johnson with his alignment with international law.
6
This is such a good point! This is why I love your channel, the way you spot the various incongruities and fallacies in politicians.
6
You could complain with the WTO. That would stop the EU from giving any more favours to the UK, 'cause that is against WTO rules.
6
The problem is that two tiny islands within those territorial waters claim an exorbitant exclusive zone -- against all regulations and Status Quo. These islands never controlled they area they now claim.
6
As it has effectively been made illegal to protest, I have little hope on that front. The UK is being sold out to the highest bidder, regardless of environmental impact.
6
Oil companies are just stuffing their pockets. The petrol we buy now is made from oil that was bought months ago, so there is no reason except extortion for prices to have risen already. Ever noticed how prices rise sharply but drop very slowly? Time for massive windfall taxes!
6
It is very simple. Dealing with Bozo is the UK's responsibility. Retaliating to Bozo's bad behaviour will hurt the whole of the UK, but will only strengthen Bozo. The EU can permit itself to be patient. At some point, its patience is up, and then they will target the UK with very specific measures designed to hurt certain politicians as much as possible with as little as possible collateral damage. You can be assured that while they seem to be doing nothing, they are in fact studying which measures will be most effective. <edit> Also, it may well be that the Brexit fallout will make the Tories' position untenable before the EU's patience runs out.
6
"I can see a whole lot of holes in this plan" I can see a whole lot of holes in buildings' walls coming up...
6
Mankind works best when co-operating. Brexit released the spirit of division, and the Tories drank deeply from it. Heady stuff, but ultimately self-destructive.
6
The Tories never speak about the average voter. They only speak about their rich mates, and by being vague let other believe they are talking about them. "Take back control" needs to be seen in that light. As does this comment.
6
You can not sue a government unless they explicitly break the law, and even then it is difficult. Most courts will not touch a case like this because it is not under their purview, being a political and not a legal matter. Basically, you are screwed if the wrong people get voted into power. Your only course of action is to get public support. Which is damn hard because most media are full of Tory sycophants.
6
Keep up the good work, Phil! The pressure is building, just keep on adding to it, and something will give. Let the Tories burn through leaders in such a tempo that even their depraved entitled minds balk at the risk.
6
@geraldwagner8739 Agreed. Brexit makes no sense. When I lived in the UK 30 years ago, I noticed articles in the tabloids that always painted the EU in a very negative light. Most were completely fabricated (100% lies). So apart from the xenophobia against Eastern European workers that "took away British jobs" -- that common though wrong idea right-wing extremists echo all over the world, UK people have been brainwashed over decades to see the EU as an enemy. The UK government contributed to this by blaming the EU for any pain their own policies caused, and claiming credit for everything the EU did for the UK. The media has encouraged this, instead of confronting those politicians. So, Brexit shows what misinformation and brainwashing can make a nation do. In that it is quite similar to how a certain mustached corporal came to power.
6
The current crop of UK leaders are terrible advertisement for UK degrees...
6
I don't consider myself the oldest generation, but I well remember "Pravda" and the speeches by Breznev. There is no difference between him and the current populist strongmen like Bozo and Dump (and Erdogan, Maduro, Duda, Orban, etc. etc). People are fearful and vote for people who exude confidence and strength, even when there is no basis for that confidence or strength.
6
There is nothing to be done except speak truth to power, as Phil is doing. Regimes like the one developing in the UK are self-destructive, and the Tories are even more self-destructive than most, so it won't last very long.
6
@Elderrion "the threats feel a bit more.." No, they don't. Ukraine was not actively engaging with either the EU or NATO for membership -- complying with Putin's demands -- yet it was still invaded. So, it is not the threats that feel more real, but the DANGER. Personally, I think it would be very wise for Finland to join NATO ASAP, knowing Putin can attack in spite of appeasement. Appeasement did not work in 1939, and it does not in 2022.
6
@hmkbch I do not share your optimism. Financial hubs exist grace of the business they facilitate. The only area that remains where London better facilitates business than other financial markets is dirty money, and the pitiful, quickly shrinking internal UK market. London has been gutted. And as @CMI2017 notes, this will trigger negative feedback loops that will devastate the UK economy. I believe the UK has entered a death-spiral similar to what we saw in Argentina a few decades ago. Especially as so many people fail to see the warning signs and prepare alternative sources of income. As far as I can tell, much of the UK is in denial and keeping up appearances. Sadly, there is a limit to how much the government can borrow before the credit rating drops and interests become prohibitive.
6
@andyknowles772 There were plenty of people who taught the lesson before 2016. Project Fear, they shouted. No, the information was given well in advance. People just didn't pay attention. Now they pay the price.
