It is so good to see you enjoying yourself ;-) The tide will turn for the UK as well. Keep up the good work, you are making a difference.

You forgot to mention they were cannibals.

@davidgreen6490 You know that our submarines routinely blow US aircraft carriers out of the waters in war games, don't you? Diesel-electric is a lot quieter than nuclear.
5
It is an illustration of the principle "Repeat a lie often enough and people will believe it". The lie being that the UK has enemies. It does not. The UK was the most respected and most pampered member of the EU, with many EU nations feeling a great debt of gratitude for their efforts in WW2, and it nearly always got its way. Yet flocks of sheeple believe the exact opposite. People should have paid more attention to the discrepancy between what the Tories promised, what they actually did when they were in power, and what they said they did.
5
You remind us of the greatest tragedy in UK politics, ever. The opposition had Bozo by the balls. They had a majority in Parliament. But instead of getting together and work out how to form a coalition government with the then-Parliament, Corbyn bet everything on a GE. It cost the dissident Tory MPs and many Labour MPs their seats, Britons their freedom, many entrepreneurs their business, and it will cost the UK its Union. I hope Corbyn can sleep at night, knowing he could have stopped it.
5
Selfishness is unconducive to people working together to run a nation. That is why populism always leads to hardship, division and strife. As Bozo is about to discover. <edit>Unless he is able to direct the anger he has fomented at a common enemy...</edit>

The Tories are totally incapable of negotiations. They are spoon fed entitlement, they rule by dumping vague ideas and expecting the civil servants to sort it out, they can't be bothered with dossiers, they live in a bubble where their egos are constantly stroked, and don't understand the concept of "rules". I am always reminded of the first day of the Brexit negotiations. The Brits, all fluff and bluster who hadn't done any preparation and without any dossiers near them, facing a composed team of expert negotiators surrounded by reams of papers, most of which they knew by heart. Lambs led to the slaughter. But still they believed they had all the cards.
5
The love of money (greed) is the root of all evil. If a contract no longer is a win-win, the other party can always walk away.
5
Calling a situation where "smart" checks are performed, an improvement over when no checks were necessary at all, is a wonderful bit of Tory logic.
5
Looks like it is going to take some time for the truth to finally sink in. Keep up the good work, Phil!
5
Rich Foley That would not just be a border between the RoI and NI. That border would surround the whole UK. It would make the UK a pariah nation and lead to massive economic sanctions. It would force Scotland to secede, and cause the DUP to be annihilated at the next NI elections. It would secede, and England and Wales would stand alone against the whole world. Not something even a Tory would want to trigger. They do not want to make England + Wales the next North Korea.
5
@FlyingFun. The EU has stimulus funds for disadvantaged regions....
5
An excellent analysis of the problems of modern supply chains. Brexit ended British just-in-time manufacturing, putting all British companies at a severe disadvantage.
5
Competent people want nothing to do with the Tories right now. Just look at the criticism they are getting from previous Tory leaders (John Mayor, Michael Heseltine), and e.g. John Bercow. That is a competent man, he wants nothing to do with the Tories anymore.
5
If you don't respect your workers, they will walk away. The UK used to be able to attract people from poorer nations to do the work, but not any more. The problem is that because there was zero time to adjust to higher wages and better circumstances gradually, the relevant businesses are going to collapse, taking the UK economy with them.
5
I would imagine that no sane person would consider Braverman a vote puller. Surely the vast majority of the UK is disgusted by her words and actions.
5
@justonecornetto80 Hey, SF or the EU did not want Brexit. The DUP actively supported it, so they must be fine with the consequences!
5
There is a reason so many Americans claim Irish roots.
5
I have news for the Brexiteers: You could have been more like German while inside the EU... That would have been MUCH easier, in fact, than trying to be like it after cutting all your trading connections.
5
Absolutely true. Sleaze has been the norm for these people for centuries.
5
@richardcory5024 In civilised countries, it is the Speaker's job to keep the proceedings on topic. The PM waffling on about his imaginary achievements in lieu of an answer to a specific question is definitely NOT on topic.
5
Instead, they keep blaming the EU. That will be of great comfort to them when their stomachs growl and the roof of hovel leaks.
5
@kevinmorris4168 Please explain why it is an EU problem when the DUP is angry with the UK government? I fail to see any connection.
5
The UK has entered the economic state of "Stagflation". It is very hard to get out of, even with competent leaders.
5
People think all that money is going to Rwanda. Knowing the Tories, I am pretty sure a large part of it is siphoned off into somebody's pockets. Someone who the Tories like.
5
The UK had better move to more container transport before they start these customs checks. Recently I had a short discussion with a Brexitard who maintained that truck transports are cheaper than containers. But that is only so because the UK is not performing customs checks. Containers are much easier to queue somewhere to wait for Customs to get round to checking them. Use the lorries only for goods that can't wait in a dockyard for a week, like fresh food. Because checks will drastically reduce the number of lorries the UK can handle per day.
5
I can remember some battles with you when you were pro-Brexit, and also your swing in position. My hat off to you, Sir. It is no small thing to be honest enough to change your standpoint.
5
It is only fitting that Brexit causes the disintegration of the Union, as it was a Dutchman that unified the UK and caused London to become the financial heart of Europe, instead of Amsterdam.
5
Rejoice, oh children now crying, for the black shadow of the Evil Lord EU has lifted! At last, we are free! No-one looking over our shoulders messing with our affairs. We are free to live our lives as the Master intended!
5
😂😂😂 I have had a perfect holiday in Switzerland, thank you very much, with plenty of service in restaurants, no reservations required. But then, I am an EU citizen.
5
@red.aries1444 "the situation will get much worse" Yes, those who supported Brexit will need to see the error of their ways first, and that is notoriously difficult. Also the constant drip-drip-drip of anti-EU propaganda from the Putin-owned media will need to stop first. As they say, it is far easier to deceive someone than to convince them they have been deceived.
5
"Moving people from low-paid productive jobs to low-paid unproductive jobs". A nice summary of Brexit.
5
There will be further steps after the ones you mention. The EU will not accept you back without fundamental, democratic reforms. Like a formal Constitution, an elected higher house, proportional representation, a government independent from parliament, etc, etc.
5
Last year they weren't. The few Brits that applied for picking fruits did not have the physical strength required for a day on the fields. So, they demand more money, work shorter hours, and get much less done.
5
Would be funny, but the issue that was addressed in those concessions was a valid issue that the EU could solve without compromising its internal market too much. No need to go back on it.
5
@cathlaurs9754 Normally, that is the job of the media. Starmer only gets 6 questions, he must use them wisely. It is up to the media to rub it in and make it clear to everybody what an inept wanker Bozo is. Britain is not suffering for lack of brains in opposition, but for lack of integrity in the media. Well, OK, the previous Labour leader did throw away his advantage in the House when he could have used it to completely prevent Brexit. But certainly Starmer is doing things right.
5
The impact will be a drawn-out affair of ever-increasing misery. It will take years for the dust to settle.
5
All this "seize the opportunities" is just the Tories shifting blame to the businesses. I will not repeat it. The Tory government is to blame for this Extreme Tory Brexit, and the associated fall-out. There is no way UK Businesses, and especially the SMB's, could have prepared for it, they are victims just as the UK people are. I wish there was a way to herd all these rabid Brexiteers into one region, let them boil in their own juices, and have those who are not at all happy with Brexit get back inside the Single Market. Oh, wait there is! Saor Alba! Reunify Ireland!
5
I thought political reform would only become an issue after the UK economy had completely crashed, but Tory sleaze and corruption has done that much quicker. I so hope Labour can win the next election on it. If they run on repairing the Brexit damage, they will fail as that can not be repaired in 5 years time.
5
What I find disgusting about this whole thing is that it takes 54 Tory MPs to have a leadership challenge. But only about 40 to have a Motion of No Confidence pass.
5
@candidaprout8441 Some people are too dense to understand the principle of "Speak softly but carry a big stick". Some people think people will only respect them when they shout abuse. Not the EU.
5
UK politics 2021: "Keeping Up Appearances" is airing a new season.
5
I read that letter of resignation, and it sure looks genuine. Enough was enough, it seems. Too many times of ignoring good advice, his temper getting the better of him, digging his own grave. Or perhaps she did not want to be part of the dismantling of UK democracy. If you have lost the trust of those who worked closest with you for so long, it is time to resign.
5
"synapse twisting activities" Great find!
5
Brexit's goal was to get out from under unelected bureaucrats. And it may well end with an unelected bureaucrat dictator ruling the UK. Well done! Hope they don't mind us calling them Brexitards, because while the Brexit failure is even more spectacular than predicted, it was predicted to be a massive act of self-harm. The epithet "Brexitard" is well deserved.
5
Good on you, Britain. Finally coming to the realisation that you should never trust a tory.
5
I am sure they put pressure on people, that is what Whips do. But to blackmail using public funds? That one might be new. Somehow I don't think so. Personally, I thing Wragg spoke up now because remaining silent would implicate him and cost him voters.
5
@chrismurray3224 We do feel sorry for you. Please consider your options, like emigrating or becoming politically active.
5
@chrismurray3224 While I understand your frustration, apparently you and yours did not do enough to prevent this catastrophe. If this had happened in many other European nations, there would have been massive protests disrupting the whole nation already. And that is no exaggeration. The British are far too meek, and the Tories know it. Don't take this as a personal attack, it is up to you to decide if you personally have done enough to protect your own future and that of your children. For all I know you have been organising protests. If so, good for you! But perhaps it is time to become (even) more active. The Tories are known to bend because of public pressure. My hope is that Brexit will teach the British how to protest, that they will learn how to confront the government with the effects of their actions.
5
@patchso Ever hear of the "Highland Clearances"? That caused untold misery, and many consider it a genocide. Yes, it was perpetrated by their own Lairds, but only after they had moved to London en-masse. Scots blame the English for them.
