one of the good things about democracy, is that public activity must be done in public, through referendum, so that the citizens can give/withhold assent, or issue a veto with initiative. result is honesty and sanity tend to characterize decisions. it's hard to be crooked or stupid when you are watched.
'democracy' is constantly heard in the west, but never seen. the word has been gutted, because of the necessity of using the word while doing theft or murder. nowadays it just means, 'we have elections!' which have zero effect on gov activity.
there is very little actual democracy among nation states, the swiss used to come close, but i suspect the embrace of the e. u. is proving to be irresistible. the rest of you zombies don't even come close.
nato politicians are politicians. they do what profits their career. for many, it's 'shoulder-to- shoulder' with equally corrupt and much more powerful usa politicians. those that are 'out-of-step' are equally corrupt, but happen to see more power/money in resistance.
you would think all of humanity, minus politicians and plutocrats, would stand up and demand democracy. it is currently necessary, not merely desirable. politicians are driving humanity off a climate cliff.

suppose for a moment that usa was run by a caste of quasi-sociopathic thieves and murderers.
now look at the actual ruling group? can you tell the difference?
i can't. i participated in yer real live genocidal war crime, usually called 'the vietnam war.' some canadian complained about what he saw in a place called 'mylai,' and nobody went to jail, although the field commander did a couple of years in barracks while they waited for the blaze to subside. 'saint' jimmy carter actually spoke up on his behalf, presumably because he saw some votes in it.
about 350 women and children, machine gunned in a ditch.
i began planning to leave, at that point, i don't know how you can endure the shame.
the thing is, the government has always been evil, and it shaped the whole nation to be complicit.
fortunately, while the nation is capable of any crime, the people in it are incapable of much planning, beyond divvying the loot. we can reasonably expect collapse will be sudden, and not long in coming.

there is a chance the bungle-on-the-capitol was a cynical exercise in preparation for drastic collapse of civil 'rights.' in favor is the obvious lack of brains involved, it was not meant to achieve anything but fear in the easily disturbed. against, is the consistent lack of intelligence throughout the trump interregnum. take yer choice, because it doesn't matter.
the usa government is evil, but so corrupt that it is evil out of character rather than plan. they bite themselves, often.
the usa constitution was written to keep the rule of the nation firmly in the hands of the 'betters.' it is consequently not responsive to the state of the nation, for the rich are the last to suffer. and the national education has been drawn to support this goal. the people are cattle, capable of the 'bungle,' incapable of citizenship, much less revolution.
i wouldn't give a damn, but the aristos who direct that ship of state make war for profit and plunder the environment for profit, and are a danger to us all.
the usa should be blockaded, all trade stopped, no visas issued.

what's in a name. italians, like other sane people, don't like their government. so they try them out for awhile, and get sick of it, and flip a coin for something new. it's often done peaceful, nowadays, that's encouraging.
unfortunately, it's never new - it's just another gang of politicians.
the 'get sick of it' part happened over-night in limey-land, and my guess is this lot will be on the nose in a year as well.
won't do any good, though. homo sapiens is just too stupid to see the use of democracy. it's genetic - several hundred thousand years of selecting for survival by saying "yessir!" to alpha males has marked our genes.
the situation is not quite hopeless. there are sparks of proto-democracy here and there, although the continual use of the word for non-democratic societies is a deep worry.
extinction is on the horizon, we may get a temporary reprieve from mere civilization collapse, whether from climate or war.
should be lifting our game, but it's more of the same.

difficult to argue with mr hedges, but what tyrants love to hear is "give peace a chance."
i estimate that this conflict has begun because of the expansion of nato, which has rolled over the former members of the ussr, one by one. nato is an imperial organ of usa foreign policy. it's nice that they use bribery instead of bullets, but usa is extending an empire, even so. and they promised not too, many years ago. liars to the core, everyone.
finally, putin feels threatened, the wolf is at the door, so he starts shooting
think of it as a much-battered wife, unable to fend of with muscles, so she picks up a gun and makes a winning argument, for a change.
putin is no fool, unlike recent usa presidents, and i suspect he struck back reluctantly. but the di is cast, and we all wonder how this turns out.
since falling into the hands of billionaires, ukraine has become the poorest nation in europe. there should be a lesson there, but homer sap is just too dim to understand the need to get democracy, at any cost. no shame in that ignorance, it is general, and the usa suffers from it. as a result, their masters have license to harrow the planet to feed their greed.
there is no virtue on either side of this conflict. johnny, don't get yer gun.

it's not just jews vs muslims, israelis vs palestinians.
it's also the evil empire maintaining a client state in the middle east. vietnam, iraq, afghanistan, and currently ukraine are all part of empire-building, lately with money rather than soldiers.
they are trying to include taiwan in the program, but that could really blow up.
usg doesn't care, they are just cynical careerists who will be far away and richer when things get bloody.
i feel a little sorry for young people. they are a generation who will watch human society collapse, painfully.
plenty of blame to go around, but the top of the list should be the usa. khomeini was laughed at when he characterized usa as 'the great satan,' but he saw clearly, even if his language was unfashionable.

nato is a military pact, aimed at ussr, and now, russia. it has advanced by buying governments, simply bribing officials to sell their nations to usa commercial interests.
this commercial war has rolled up to russia border.
putin finally decided 'too far,' and went for the gun. think of him as a much-beaten wife, who decided to shoot the bastard.
will he succeed? quien sabe? but unlike the last two usa 'leaders,' he appears to be sane and well-informed.
would ukraine, the whole society, be better off as an independent buffer state?
very likely. since it came under the control of billionaires, ukraine has become the poorest nation in europe.

no erosion, the establishment of israel was a process of 'buy, frighten, shoot.' from the beginning. the intent was to build a jewish state, current occupants, largely muslim would have to leave.
with near-success, the jewish bandits have started to white-wash their elders. 'this was always israel, we just took it back." if this principle was followed everywhere, the last human standing would feel he had to shoot himself in the head.
and it suits the usa to assist. for no cost, in principle, the politicians get large chunks of usa jewish money for their election expenses, and their grandchildren's university fees.
it was an invasion, it is an invasion, and israel has located itself on a bomb-sight.
no immediate danger, middle east nations have been too busy dealing with cia plots, ethic hatred and historical violence, and no one is capable of troubling israeli military..

aristotle was smarter than you. he wrote a book about politics, classical hellas was chock-full of politics, and he came to several important conclusions:
the fundamental question to ask about any society is, "who decides?"
depending on 'who decides,' various labels appear, 'aristocracy' is rule by the best. monarchy is rule by a king, timocracy is rule by the generals, autocracy is rule by one, and democracy is rule by the citizens.
usa is an aristocracy, although many would argue that politicians are not the best of humanity. others would contend that they are, particularly when they are, or seem to be 'the people's choice.' regardless of your opinion on this matter, the president, congress and supreme court rule the nation. certainly not the people.
so the usa is not a democracy. consequently, when you hear someone say, "we need to do away with the electoral college," or "they should limit the term of justices," you are listening to a child dressed in his parent's clothes, or a fool, or a cynical liar intending to fool you into believing your opinion is valuable, when it is not.
you have no formal input into the management of your nation. politically, aristotle would call you one of several disparaging words, but a not a 'citizen.'
among those various kinds of political society, aristotle came to the reluctant conclusion that democracy was best. only because the others were worse.
democracy is not unknown in the usa, several states have democratic constitutions and use them. but most of the people in the usa are simply not citizen quality.
elites always rot, usa aristocracy is typified by donald trump.
thing won't get better, the materials are not there.

usa is not a democracy, so you don't have rights. you have privileges, offered as bribes when some politicians needs more votes, and withdrawn when he doesn't need them.
ignorant, passive people will be ruled by some elite, whether born aristocrats, military junta, or political gang. in the usa, it's the gang.
if you want a better life, you have to be part of the ruling group. for most people that group can only be as the citizens of a democracy.
but how to get democracy?
you can't get it by voting for politicians. the transfer of power must come outside the laws of the nation. the laws maintain the power of politicians.
revolution need not be violent, but it does require a lot of people willing to say, "or else!"
